Hello...i was wondering what kind of leader length most guys use. I only use about 2 feet of flouro off my braid but have seen guys using 50-60 foot leaders which I don't see why. Am I missing something??

Charlie Wray says use 50 feet of Seagar Florocarbon - of course he's being paid to say that..............................

We use approx 25 feet of florocarbon, not as long as Charlie would like, but satisfies our need for a clear lure with no leader shadow.

Lotsa Luck

General rule of thumb is a 30' leader on cores and coppers in the clear water of the Great Lakes.
Bay of Quinte is very dirty and it could be a lot shorter. Last week we couldn't see a bright coloured lure deeper than 3 feet beside the boat. Fluoro not necessary on Quinte because of the low light penetration. I prefer mono leaders over fluorocarbon leader material because I think the lure has better action.

3-5ft.... with the somewhat stained colour of the water, I dont find much need for anything longer.

Jim, are you talking about trolling for Walleye? With or without boards? If you're flatlining with braid, I think a long leader of floro/mono 30-40 feet is necessary for a bit of stretch on the hookset. I believe with planer boards, there would be enough "give" in the line from your rod tip to the board, so a shorter leader would probably be alright.

This year I switched my planer board setup to mono as a mainline cause I don't really see the need for braid. (Trolling for Walleye)

I like braid on my flatlines so I can see the action of the lure better through my rod tip. Easier to tell if your line is fouled up.
