Quinte Fishing

Alright all, pay attention. I have heard back from the MNR. This information hear posted is not my opinion, they are facts from the MNR.

Note: The information here has been written specificially to address the issue of entering multiple 24.8+ inch walleye in the derby this weekend.

Fact 1:

A 24.8+ inch walleye is consider part of one's daily limit when you put a walleye on/in a stringer, rope, live well, etc. (taken it into your possession). This fish now counts towards your daily limit.

Fact 2:

An angler may keep/retain/possess only one Walleye over 24.8 in (63 cm) in Division 8 (the Bay of Quinte).

The catch limit is the number of fish you are allowed to catch and keep in one day. The possession limit is the number you are allowed to have in your possession on hand, in cold storage, in transit, etc.

Note: In Divison 8 the possession limit and catch and keep limit are the same.

Side note: Keep in mind too that any 24.8+ inch walleye kept to eat count towards your possession limit (and therefore you catch limit) till it is eating.

Fact 3:

Once a 24.8+ in walleye is retained, the angler limit of 24.8 inch walleye has been reached. This means any other walleye caught must be immediately release. The retained fish cannot be exchange with the walleye just caught (i.e.: culled).

Fact 4:

When a 24.8+ inch walleye is weigh-in, the tournament organizers are now in possession of your walleye, those fish were originally caught and retained by the angler. Therefore the angler can not possess other 24.8 inch walleye for that day as he/she has already caught their limit (1 24.8+ inch walleye).

The final word. As determine in the other post you can only weigh-in one (1) 24.8+ inch walleye per day per angler this weekend. You can however continue to fish but all other 24.8+ inch waleye must be immediately released.

Below is not from the MNR but is my interruption:

As a side note, culling in Ontario is illegal (this is a fact). So in a bass tournament a team has a 5 bass limit. With 2 anglers that have a sport license that means you can have 12 bass in their possession. Since it is illegal to allow fish to spoil and you can only have 5 bass in the baot (as per the tourney rules), the team can release up to 7 bass that have been retained. The released bass still count towards their daily limit.

Thanks for the reply Mike, I didn't mean to start a frenzy with the last post but I wanted to know where we stand and now I know. I guess I will allow my buddy to come along as the 3rd guy in the boat just in case he's needed. Good luck fishing everyone!!
