Hi all seen my first gar pike in real life today in the Moira (seen them at Bass pro in the tanks before) and I was wondering what you guys use to try and catch these beasts? And is there a time of day that works better for them? This one was sitting off to the edge in little to no current and didn't budge for anything I threw out at it.

I have heard they are hard to catch but there must be something that at least gets them to bite? I have no desire to keep one either I am just looking to knock it off my bucket list so to speak.

Thanks and any help or reports would be great!!!

Anything that looks like a minnow they will hit. With the hard jaw its difficult to set a hook. Some use rope lures that tangle in their teeth or a snare. I am going to try and get one or two this summer too.

Gars are a challenge. I see them every day and know where there bedding grounds are. They are difficult beasts to catch but I'll let you know my lil secrets, hope this helps. Please remember catch and release are difficult with these fish.

TOP WATER - they will smash anything top water, however you will likely miss most of them due to the fact there is a very small portion of their mouth you can get a successful hook set,

Spinner Bait/ with worms- they love this however again there is a very small portion of their mouth you can hook them in,

I've walked on 4 inches of ice and watched schools of them swim under my feet and it is an awesome sight.

and the trick is,ties some old rope onto a good sharp hook, they hit anything that comes near them and the rope helps to lock them in. It gets tangled around their teeth and you can bring them in.. As far as regulations go, I have not found ONE word in the MNR's BS to say this isn.t legal, someone correct me please if Im wrong....

PS I did not appreciate the MNR in their nice Lund FuryXL pulling up to me an the with in our canoe......

They think they are someone special,,, f>>>>ck that.... they could have swamped us and I'm pretty sure they are lucky that did not happen. Guy asked me three +++++ times how the fishin was and I told him every time I had'nt even dropped my line in the water... prick...

Heads up for ALL you MRN guy's, just because you have a flashy suit and a nice boat does NOT give you the RIGHT to approach me in a canoe without good reason, we pay your wages!!!!!!!

I saw hundred of them in the shallows at the mouth of the Napanee river just where the bend is with the big shallow bay. I have caught them pulling a worm harness just below the surface, its great when you can sight fish them and watch them chase. Good to hear the MNR is out checking EVERYONE.

I see them ALL the time Musky fishing and have had many follow bucktails. I watched a show last year where all the guy used was a spinner/bucktail with no hook and took wool making it look like a mop. They nip at the wool pulsing through the water and get's stuck in all those teeth. If you can get one they make for a great fight, I've never tried it but it sure worked for that guy

Bumping my post from last year because I can't seem to find any info on them in the regs are they classified as regular pike?

Been doing a lot of reading this winter and I am hoping to catch just one of these this year!

Medium sized floating rapala with three triple hook in natural colors or a spoon with a triple hooktrailer. Make sure to use braid to avoid bite offs

they're actually pretty simple to catch, hook, sinker and minnow, add a float if you like, prefer no float, ounce you spot one, throw your minnow to it, jiggle it a bit then drop it near the gar and it will grab it, especially if the minnow is alive, give it around 20 seconds to take the bait in, they take it in as they swim away.

Do you plan on keeping them? Have you ever ate one before? I believe they are classified as course fish, falling under the same category as carp, suckers, and bowfin..... So yeah, go nuts if you want to eat them. There is a reason why people do not eat them, they have poisonous roe, and have body armor that rivals a sherman tank..... Good luck with that. But yes there is no mention of them in the regs anywhere so i can see where your confusion is coming from.

But man they sure are fun to hook on top!!!

I caught one ice fishing a couple months ago. Caught on a Rippin Rap. They were on my underwater camera steady for a few hours, but did not seem very aggressive. They just sat there on bottom, and on occasion would swim around slowly. I actually thought the first one we saw was a log, until it moved about 20 minutes after we spotted it on the camera.
This was out from Aikens Rd between Trenton and Belleville.
