Great store in the USA,but from what a lot of people says the 3 they have out west are crap.Barrie is suppose to be 70,000 sq.ft. not very big compared to BPS at vaughan 130,000 sq.ft.

Sure would have liked to have seen it closer to our area, but hopefully our shipping costs go down now. All too often that made the difference between a good price or not.

They are obviously very dumb at their competition/elimination motivated store placement. Why would they put it near the Bass Pro when there is only 1 in Ontario?.... would it not make more sense in Kingston or Durham to target Vaughn Bass pro's untapped market?.. It could easily compete with Sail in Durham but.... Bass Pro, and Cabelas are both very similar stores.... Sail is a bit different. Just my opinion.

Although it makes sense to you and I that they have a large chain outdoor store in Kingston, it makes little sense to the large company to build one.
You see, they have a mathamatical formula to determine store placement. Large chain stores need "X thousand" population with "X thousand" dollars per capita income living within "X" square kilometers to even consider building a store.

It's no matter that a larger percentage of the community's per capita income is spent on outdoor gear, or the fact that several times the percentage of population in one area VS another participates in outdoor activities, or even the fact that a store in Kingston would draw from an extremely large area. What matters is that this "economic profiling" formula IS proven to work, Kingston does not fit it's criteria, and the investors in big chain stores are not willing to take a "risk" on Kingston.

So long story short, for better or for worse, don't expect a big chain store between Ottawa and Oshawa anytime soon. Appreciate the stores we DO have locally. For the most part they have what we need, we don't have to wade chest deep through frills, and whats more, the money we spend generally stays in the community... although it is nice to take a yearly pilgrimage to the big camoflage box store. :D

The Barrie location is probably the worst location due to traffic as well as population of the area, I know Barrie is growing, but it still is Barrie...... don't really think it'll be that prosperous, you have BPS and Sail in Vaughan where EVERYONE who travels north on the 400 will stop in before Cabelas in Barrie - When your in that kind of traffic all the way up through Barrie, the last thing you want to do if wait in more traffic just to spend money on more gear.... its a bad location, Cabelas is simply too late to the game in Ontario.

What the area from Oshawa to Kingston really needs is a store like Lebarons, however the Canadian Tire's in these locations have really stepped it up, but the pricing on some items are just plain retarded....

I'd say lebarons 110%, they have great pricing on both hunting and fishing stuff, great sales, and no yuppie clothing like Sail has.

What you guys are missing out on is the population to the north of Barrie, that store will draw from Sudbury, North Bay and possibly even as far as Sault st Marie as well as a sizeable population from the GTA . These guys aren't stupid.I would like to see one in the Kingston area but I doubt it will ever happen due to the limited population (frankly its a good thing they don't have one close) they do have a Cabellas south of Syracuse I beleive and the Bass Pro in Auburn isn't that good really. Dustycraven brought up some good points ....there are a couple of really good private stores to deal with....Gagnons and Paddletails.
