Hey Boys,

I was thinking of heading down to Port Hope this week for the annual Salmon run but I was hoping someone could let me know if the Salmon are in the river yet or if they are staged at the mouth?

Also, if anyone could let me know of a few spots to fish as I've never been to Port Hope before it would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

The salmon are definitely running, but as usual it seems to be hit or miss. Last Tuesday was a really good day on the river as the bite was on all day. Your best bet would be to park in the dirt parking lot on the west side of the river (be sure not to park along fence as its a new bylaw and you will get a ticket). You can then make the decision if you want to stay in river near the walk bridge is a good producing spot or if no one is catching then you can walk out past the plant and try there. You can fish both inlets (west side of plant goes into port hope yacht club) from the end as both produce- J13 fire tiger rapala works great out there. I was up at the ladder yesterday and the last posted fish count was from Sept 2nd 973, which seems very low to me. There was a couple hundred staged at the ladder but few were jumping, out of the few that were they were mostly browns. Good luck hope it helps. If the count really is that low then there are plenty more that still have to reach the ladder. I know I will be down there for sure this week.

Just watch parking as not a lot of spots. Best bet for the next few days is park at the ball park on caven and work south. Also fish up to the Glenn now and lots of parking

As I said before this is new to me so is fishing with a float and roe not a good idea?

What about casting spoons at the mouth?

Yep they are still catching them up at the mouth off the lighthouse. To park there you need to take same road that takes you to the dirt parking lot (Queen Street). Instead of going into the parking lot follow the sharp corner to the west, the street at that point turns into Hayward Street. Follow that street all the way around the Cameco plant then follow the street south towards the water, it will seem like you are just driving into the employee parking lot for Cameco but the street continues past the factory and opens up into a small parking lot. Walk out on the rocks to the lighthouse and cast away... like I said before the J13 firetiger rapala is deadly out there as well. Good luck
Cheers

Roe and float can be killer during early morning and just before dark!
After dark it's good to bottom fish!
If fishing up river (closes at end of month) float, fly or bottom all work good.
