Finally got out to fish the bay for the first time in 3 years. I've been out of the country for a while. We had 2 great days. Fished east of Shermans (in front of the house with the flat stone beach). Caught 12 on Saturday including one 27" and 2 about 25". Used Cotton Cordel Big O (white) drift / casdting. The rest were inthe 18"-22" range. Caught a 12lb sheepshead too! Sunday was also very productve. Fished Shermans for a few hours and caught 5 until the action died off. Used Bakers bait spinners (green). Had some more success just east of Ram island (from Ram to the grass islands). Marked a ton of fish and caught another 9 in the 17-22" range. Finished of the day in front of Bayview and caught a bunch, mostly small (15"-18") plus a LM bass (about 4lbs). Loaded up the cooler with some great eats (thank god for no MNR people)!!! Hopefully, I'll get back before the end of the summer.

No, come down again. Just make sure you let me know where you are launching from so I can dissassemble your trailer and have one of my MNR buddies waiting for you when you get in to shore.

Happy fishing idiot.

I used to fish the bay many years ago until the slot limits came into effect. I think the slot limit is rediculous. There's a ton of walleye in the BoQ. These MNR folks are on drugs.

if you fished 'many years ago, before the slot' how can you know if the slot is rediculous?

that one statement shows quite a bit about your intellagence!

My point is that there's a ton of fish in the BoQ and the slots are unnecessary. Every time I spoke with an MNR official they always reminded me of how many fish are in that body of water. Hardly in jeopardy! What was needed was better enforcement of the existing limits by the MNR, education and by peer fishermen. How many times do you see people take and kill fish for non-copnsuption purposes? I see peole throwing out sheepshead, pike, catfish.... This tells me that many peole don't understand the value of the fishery. When the slots were being discussed a few years ago, I remember everyone was up in arms and disputed the MNRs claim that the walleye fishery was in peril. Is everyone now suddenly in agreement with the slots? More damage is being done to the walleye fishery from other means: poaching, zebras, cormorants, gobies, etc... That's where the MNR should place their energies, not by punishing the people who have sustained the BoQ's economy for the past 20 years.

The slots are making a difference. If not by increasing the spawning population of the Walleye or protecting those big Walleye spawners or even changing the mentality of the anglers that come to the Bay Qunite, the slots are working.

Your idea of waiting for a fishery to be in peril is a great idea. Let's wait to there are no Walleye and then we will think of doing something.

You talk about educating people about the value of their fishery and you come hear and post that the slot limits are unnecessary. Value of fishery -> translate to lets understand the current situation and recognize something needs to be done cause at the rate of comsuption the fishery will not be hear in a few years. How do we do that -> slot limits have been around for a long time and are proven to work on various bodies of water. No that does not make sense.

BTW, I love seeing anglers come off the water with 5 9 lb Walleye in hand. Makes me want to go and shake their hand [and than...].

Get with it. Slot limits work!

Cheers,

Mike

I made my first trip to BOQ in 1977, my first night out I landed and released a 12 lb and 17 lb eye. Everyone in our party had a 12 lb plus that weekend (June) and took home all the fillets they desired (within MNR limits of course). I have fished the bay every year since and have noted the decline of late.

While some argue that slot limits are not the perfect answer we must all be thankful that the MNR and government in general is a least taking a proactive approach to the plight of BOQ sportfishing. I drive the 401 daily and the steady stream of boats attests to the amount of money this fishery brings to local business. Whether we agree with the current course all fishermen(any one who flaunts the regulations is not one in my books) must work within the regulations and work towards changing those they do not agree with if this beautiful body of water is to continue to be the exceptional source of enjoyment and revenue it has always been.

One last note, a few years ago when pickings were sparse a lot of people I had met over the years began backing away from the Bay as their primary fishing sport. Since the slots and an increase in catchs, be they smaller, many are returning for the fun and the action. Remember the act of going fishing is all the enjoyment, catching fish is the bonus

Jimbo

take your grandkids fishing
