ok guys im putting this out there to see if there is an answer and or how many answers id get right or wrong.
Joe is fishing. seems to be having a great day and before you know it he has his limit of four fish laying at his feet on the ice. his buddy Sam also having a great day on the ice but coming up short of his limit with 2 fish at his feet........... now here is the big question. can Joe keep fishing pulling out more walleye . keep in mind he has his limit of fish in possession .
is there a legal issue here or isn't there? Joe never intends to keep any more fish but it is also illegal to put back a dead or mortal fish this all derives from sportsman wanting to catch and reliece but also wanting to take a limit home with him. what is best thing to do ? quickly catch a limit not knowing when fish will turn off and keep fishing after limit has been reached? or should he hold back with 3 on the ice. and toss back until he is ready to call it a day?
Another scenario is is it ok to catch a limit in the morning, and go back for the late day bite fully intending on putting back every fish he catches since he has already reached his daily limit of fish?
Would be interesting to hear peoples thoughts on this topic and also if there happens to be a MNR guy maybe he can chime in later and tell us the answer

if you have your 4 fish, you can keep fishing with the intent to release all fish. If you mortally wound a fish you are suppose to put it back.

Really glad you brought this topic up Grizz. It will be real interesting to see the answers. Mine is once you get your limit your done for the day and you can not catch fish on someone else's limit. Its a daily limit which means you cant get your limit in the morning then go back out later that day and get more

I agree with demo man since if you catch a 5th fish you are in possession of 5 fish and illegal until it's released.

I would keep 3 and my 4th when I'm done. If I don't get it... Oh well

Same logic goes for the 1 over you are allowed. What if u hook one deep and it's fatally wounded after you already have a trophy on the ice that you plan on mounting.

It is a possession limit technically if you have 4 at home you can't keep anymore either. Not even a daily limit.

so in theory you catch 4, have a shore lunch and go back to fishing?

Check out page 7 on the MNR fishing regs. It talks about catch and possession laws. I read that you can still fish after you get your limit as long as you release it quick. Nothing about what happens if its mortally wounded

and shark the question is when you have 4 at your feet I didn't say anything about bringing a fry pan and oil lol
way I see it is you can move in swich gear and go for perch this keeps you on the water or ice but can you or should you be targeting a fish when you have a possession in your pocket

Way I understand it is each person has a daily catch limit, that number includes fish given away and consumed. If I catch my 4 fish and have 1 for shore lunch, give one to Joe, I have to release all other fish I catch that day. Possession limit, if it is set to one days catch I have to count the ones at home, if it's two days catch I can have four at home.
That's my 2 cents worth, and remember at a store they would round that to a nickel
Cheers rob

4 fish is your daily limit it is also your possession limit. If you catch 4 and go to shore and eat themYou can keep on fishing but must release all fish even if mortally wounded, and no you cannot help catch another fisherman's limit LEGALLY.
