I know I didn't catch it in Quinte but I though it might be of interest.

Well I had been chuck’ in heavy lures for 2 days now and only was able to round up a couple of follows. I even attempted trolling, and for me you know I’m jonesing then.

But like usual I turn to are old friend the panfish, cause you know when your hurting for some hits they will always be there for ya.

While I was jigging away a 36-inch muskie came out of nowhere and swallowed the tiny jig (a 1 inch Bass Assassin on black jig head). Luckily the line ended up in the corner of his mouth and missed all the teeth. After a 15-minute fight (which involved chasing him with the trolling motor at times to keep him from running away with all the line) and some skill full cradle work, we landed him! What a crazy way to start the season.

Take a look here under the muskie section for pictures.

I’m not good at estimating weight so how much do you think it weighs?

Mako,

Thats Musky Fishing
-Very illusive, and sometimes they play hard to get.
-Changing patterns and different stragies is a must when searching for these unperdictable fish.

Not recommended to use such light line but jigging can always be an option.

Take a look around where you caught that fish to see what structures are there as well you must take in consideration weather paterns and water temp. You just might be on a new tactic when fishing is tough.

The weight of that fish looks like it is in the 6lb - 10lb range. Due to the fact that its an early season fish and if its a Karwatha muskie (little lighter).

Good Job.

The structure was quite interesting and its a type of structure I have fished and caught most of my muskies on the Otonobee. Its where the current coming down from the dam is quite fast and the there is a point jetting out in the river, just down stream of the point the water seems to go in the opposite direction and where that water blends with the real current "eddies" are formed.

My boat was slowly floating up stream in this weird backwards current and I was no more than 10 feet from shore but it was a steep drop off and where I was it was 15 feet deep. The muskie could of came from right under the boat, I couldn't tell it hit so fast.

My parents just bought a place on the bay and I was wondering is it worth chucking muskie lures in the bay or is there a low population of them? The house is right across from Belleville.

There are muskies in the Bay of Quinte.
Very few people actually go there to target them but there is trophie potential. The clearer water and more weed structure is making the habitat better year after year. The Bay is becoming better for Bass,Pike, and muskies. I do fish there quite a bit from mid summer and on after there is good weed structure. We seen a muskie last week in the mid 40" class off snake island. I do know of some people that have caught 50"+ muskies out of there but they are far apart. You may go a few days between fish.

Good Luck,

If you are going to target I reccomend stronger line then 4lb test.
:)

If you like the thin diameter Power Pro is by far one of the best super lines on the market. I use 80lb and 100lb Power Pro but you could get away with 50lb at 12 mono diameter.

This Season is rock'in! 8)

Amazing sucsess so far and its been only a few weeks in. We have had 8 muskies already over the 40" mark and one almost 50". We have seen at least 30 muskies so far with 3-4 in the 50" class by boat side.

Still cant get over the Pike we are catching. we have had at least 25 pike in already using larger muskie plugs. 5 have been over the 8lb range.
Had an accidentaly Walleye on an 8" leo jerk bait last monday.

The fish have been very aggressive.
This is going to be a good year.

Talk to you soon Larry and good luck!
