Sorry, a bit late on this.

I took my little guys to Weller's Bay again last Saturday with a couple of friends. We took the 4-wheelers and set up off Smokes Point in about 10 FOW. I drilled two holes for the boys and within seconds my 7 yr old steps right down into one of them. I yanked him out as quick as I could but he was soaked. I took his boot liners and socks and wrung them out, set up the shelter and got the heater going. So there he sat, boots and socks hung above the heater, bare foot and fishing away catching a few perch and quite happy about it. That's my boy!

I got my other son set up and he could see bottom. He became real exited about a big fish down there. I had a look down and a pike was below him. He spent the next hour trying to get him. The pike would swim in, then off again and repeat every few minutes.

After an hour or so, my friends wanted to go for a ride on the 4-wheelers and my son wanted to go as well while I sat with the bare footed boy. He went out and seconds after the 4-wheelers started, the pike smashed a gold buckshot. I yelled at him to get back and reel it in. I think the sound of the bikes starting set him off. No matter, there was one happy boy with his first pike through the ice.

Great seeing kids enjoy the outdoors. Sure miss seeing the smiles on my boys faces like that. Never had the opportunity to take my boys ice fishing at that age but they spent a lot of time fishing off the jetty for Mackerel and Tommy cod in Shearwater. Now they both have a rod and small tackle box in their cars at all times…lol Glad I made an impression on them and hope they pass it on to their kids if they have any.

Awesome job on the pike. Took my 7 year old son to Sherman's a few weeks ago and turned around to find him with his entire arm in the hole with the water up to his shoulder with his Mitt and sleeve soaked in -13 weather. I asked him what he was doing and he said "I saw you doing it daddy", speaking of me pulling a little slush off the top of the water with a bare hand. Kids do the darnedest things...

Great story about the youngsters - it's a joy to fish with them.

Good job, nothing better than hearing about a hard core fisher kid. I have two of my own and they put a smile on my face each time we go out.

I took my sister and brother in law out in the same area a couple weeks back and she hooked into an identical fish. Couple of pics and down she went.
