So if you have a 12 or 14 foot boat that doesn't require insurance and you don't have insurance on such a vessel, you can't compete? Is that right?

As there is no requirement to insure boats in Ontario( unless they carry paying passengers )

:?: I'm sure I'm just un-informed...but what's all the hub-up about insurance? I have a 14 ft tinny, I almost always have a passenger...do I need some kind of insurance??

Yes, like all tournaments, we do require all anglers to have a valid insurance. If you would like to discuss this further you can call the office 613-478-2535. Thanks!

We can't speak for that tournament however it may be because they may be allowing boats to be covered under house policy insurance. For our tournament you have to have boating insurance.

No you don't have a card because Ontario law does not require you to provide proof of insurance for a boat unless you are a commercial operator taking clients for hire. I'm sure your insurance company would give you some sort of letter stating insurance. Most carry insurance on larger boats but most with 12 and 14 foot boats rely on coverage under their homeowners policy and don't carry the unrequired liability coverage.

And for that reason I will be out like many others .... terrible rule for a small community derby... good luck continuing on.

Continuing on from what horsehunter said. I have a small 14 ft boat and my insurance company does provide liability coverage while I am using the boat (not all do). They told me if I am planning on entering any tournaments to call them and they will provide a letter confirming that I have the required liability coverage. I'm really hoping that having a letter and not an actual insurance slip does not create any issues during these tourneys.

The ice is almost off Stoco Lake. One little problem we are having some flooding issues. However, the water is starting to drop and fingers crossed we have a boat launch on April 26th. If not remember we do have an alternative date of May 10th. Who knows ... you might even be able to catch some black crappie under the bleachers right now! :)
