We have had a few swans in our bay for the last week or so.
Yesterday morning I found one on the side of the road just beside the marsh.
The head had been bitten off and no where to be seen and the whole swan
had been eaten. Only the feathers, neck and carcass was left.
I goggled swan enemies and it appears once they are adults that they have few enemies.
This one was large enough to be one of the big males and it sure met its match.

Anyone have any idea what is capable of doing this to such a large bird?
My guess would be a fisher, coyote.
Any other guesses?

Weasels love to eat the heads off birds. As small as they are, if you have ever seen one on a killing spree, they would have no problem taking out a swan. An owl would be another good bet.

A coyote or fisher would drag it off into the woods to eat it there. They wouldn't be as picky and would eat more than just the head.

We saw a swan a couple years ago at East Lake that appeared to be ill or something. We came back a day later and saw the carcass where we had seen the swan lying down.

Something ate part of it away.

They do have enemies and when they are helpless, then they're a target.

The loss of one or two isn't going to hurt their population, NYS wants a cull, especially in Central Park.
