Sept 26 2004 - 11lb Lake Ontario walleye...
Image

Let the fall fishing games begin!

Hit the upper gap near Bath on the North Channel Sept 26 and fished from 11 am til 2pm and managed a few big eyes coming in from Lake Ontario.

11lb 31" eye that managed to make three 160 foot runs before I could get her to the boat. Also a 28" eye that also put up a good fight. Both eyes came off of inline planer boards 100+ feet out from the boat on a Manns' +20 and a Wally Minnow.

Glad to hear of your success. I have wondered about the area and have considered fishing there. Now I have good reason to give it a try! Were you in the vicinity of the old celanese plant?...Larry

Looking at my paper chart last night I noticed it is marked the Lower Gap, but my GPS map has it marked as Upper (Could lead to a small navigational mishap )...anyway I was fishing directly south of the Hydro Plant

Right on Eye-Tracker. That's the area used only by a FEW. Like Hay Bay Larry always suspected eyes in that area.

USed to fish the Melville Shoal in Aug for the lkae Mamas.

See you on the water

Well Done! Nice to see some "outside the box" location success. In your post you said the boards were out 100' to the side. I was wondering how long the lead was from the lure to the board. The other question was did you notice any color chose was better? Again nice job!

Hey Superdad...
I have been out about 15 times over the summer working the shoals out in Lake Onatrio (when the waves let me) and caught some nice fish (Walleye and Lake Trout), so I knew they would work their way into the North Channel and Adolphus Reach.

Soon I will need a 22ft boat so I can fish the Big Water all the time :D

BTW everytime I have been out near Bath and the Gap at least one charter boat has been working the same area. So I figure there is alot more fish in the area then just Walleye.

see ya on the water...

 Post subject: 14 foot boat?
PostPosted: Thu Sep 30, 2004 4:43 am
I have a brother who lives in Kingston, so I will have to visit him :)
Is a 14 footer too small to fish in the gap region? Could imagine that the wind could really blow up if coming from the wrong way!

What is there in the area for boat launches so that one would not have to travel so far?

Thanks

There are some boat launches over on the Prince Edward county side which are closer to the Upper Gap. It's a bit of a drive to get there but will cut down the water travel, especially with a 14 footer.

The wind can come up quickly out there so be careful.

There is a boat launch not too far from the gap in Bath or just west of Bath. Good deep launch and a short run to the gap.

I believe the ramp in question is the excellent one at Finkles shore park west of bath. The bonus is the french fry truck conveniently located there.
From the launch ramp to the power plant is about 8-10km.
Don't forget thiis area is open to prevailing winds from the south west. Also due south of the power plant is the full force of Lake Ontario if there is high winds [just a reminder]....larry

Out this morning at 8am with a 27.5 '" walleye taken with blue and silver Husky Jerk from 140" of water before I could snap by in line planer on. Another fish a half hour later on a clear HJ but didn't make a boat side appearance, just broke my line. Mitch
