I have searched for the answers to my questions and have turned up empty, hoping someone here can help.
I have a Lowrance HDS unit that obviously can not upload (rather navionics is not allowed to use the upload) sonar logs for the updates of the sonarcharts. But Lowrance CAN use the sonarcharts that are uploaded by humminbird and garmin.
My question is can I use an inexpensive humminbird or garmin to record sonar logs, upload, and then after navionics does it's thing download the updated sonarcharts to the Lowrance?

Yes, you can do this. Record your logs on another unit and then upload those logs to Navionics. Then after Navionics finishes processing, you can download them to your Navionics chip that supports SonarCharts. Then use the updated chip in your Lowrance.

That leads to my next question then... what would be an inexpensive unit that would do the job? I don't want to spend a ton of money as it will only be used infrequently and only for this purpose.

The least expensive Humminbird unit that can record sonar logs is the 386ci. You can take a look at that unit here http://radioworld.ca/386ci-combo-p-11405.html
