Hi guys,
I just picked up a new toy for this fall season. Its a Bantham 1500 line counter reel. No more counting pulls of line to figure how much line out. However I now have to spool this thing so I decided I would see what others are using. I was thinking about Vanish line in 10lb test maybe even 8lb test. Other thing I was thinking about was fireline with a vanish leader. What are you r suggestions??? I will be out saturday but not sure if in my boat or Kevins(he has a new Tracker )

Vanish is a great line because of the ablilities flurocarbon line has to be invisible in the water, but it has very poor shook absorbtion and will occasionally break at the knot from a powerful fish strike.

I took my rigging pools with me last week and didn't bother changing the line. I wanted to go lighter, but I said what the hay and left the 17lb trilene on (Salmon trolling). It worked great. But if I were to spool up specifically for trolling walleye in the back of quinte, I'd choose 12lb trilene. If I was jigging, I'd go with 8lb trilene backing with 6lb fluro leader.

Dann,
I would not use vanish as the main line - one nick and it will break...I would go with 12lb Trilene and then use a 8 or 10 pound vanish leader if the bite is tough on calm clear days. If you do use a vanish leader check it after every fish or after hitting bottom for nicks...I usually cut off and re-tie about six to eight times a day when using a fluro leader.

cheers'

:D Hey Dan...How's it going ?.....My vote is for the Power Pro...great stuff !along with a mono leader ! The Precision Trolling Guides are rated at 10lb diameter so whatever your choice make it 10lb thick.
See ya at Merland the end of November ! Already booked in ! :D

Parky.

Braided Line is the way to go Dan. You can go real light with the diameter of a spider web.

I'm using Reminton Power-LokT, 20 lb test 6 lb diameter. It's a lot less expensive than Power Pro or Stren Braided or some of the others.

I bought mine on eBay during the winter. Got some GOOD deals.

Thanks guys for all the replies.
Well last night sitting in the basement and looking over my stock of line I decided to go with 15lb Power pro (DIA 4lb.) and then added 35' of 20lb Vanish. I am all set. Will be out tomorow, look for the red ranger with Bla/silv stripes. Pull up and say hello.
Hey Parky where ya been? Markus, Welcome aboard!! We'll have to do a webmaster fish one day

Thanks for the welcome Dan. :P But I'm no Webmaster...fishhawk owns and runs the disco, I'm just the big hairy bouncer at the front door!

You have a great site. I've developed a liking for the bay! :P

I use 30 lb test fire line and I tie a blood knot/ or use a barrel swivel then put a 3-5 ft lead of mono preferably trilene. The lead helps a bit with shock and also it is less visible. Any floating weeds and one rip and they are off, you can feel exactly what the bait is doing!! I`ll be down there on sunday. Hey Markus glad to see you on this board and that you had a successful trip when you came down to the bay. The fishing here is second to none!!! We will have to hook up and go bass and walleye fishing in the summer and if you like pike I have some great spring and early summer spots.

Markus, not sure about the 7; I have to check my wifes schedule and see. shift worker you know. My home computer has been down so I have been trying to get on at work just not near as often. I have a house trailer down in picton so anytime in the summer you would like a tour let me know. I`m heading to quinte tomorrow and can`t wait after seeing some of your pictures. Last year went down and the largest I caught was 11.7 lbs. In August I caught a 8lber on a spinnerbait... that was cool.
