Best Walleye Boat

I'm shopping for a new 14-16' alum. boat to use primarily for walleye with my 20 hp Honda. I'd like a flat bottom one. My old one was a Starcraft 14.6' and was pretty good except for backtrolling was no fun (short transom). I'm studying brocures, but they all say they're the best. I heard terrible things about Legend boats, but they seem to have good, heavy materials, and decent looking. Any suggestions. (I need rear tiller).

I had a Legend for a few years. Now I can say, it was a fine boat for the money I paid. It was a console model, Viper151 with a 25hp 4 stroke. If you're looking at a tiller model. You'll be fine with a Legend.

Go with what your gut tells you too :!:

i have an aluminum craft navigator sport 175 115 johnson four store on the back handle great on the water just some thing other to think about. it has an 93 in. beam full windshields .

Boomer: I have a legend boat circa 1991! It is an excellent hull that was made by smokercraft. I am not sure if current models are still made by smokercraft or not. It has allways served me well. It's 17.5 ft' and has a merc 60hp motor that is a very good package. It's rated for a 115 hp but I was looking for something that trolled well not top speed. it still will do 35 mph.
I would also by another if I could find the same setup now[which they don't currently make]!
Perhaps the horror shows you are hearing is because they are made by a different company.....larry

I also have a Legend....2003 169 GenX. with a 90 four stroke...great boat....I fished Lake ontario for salmon most of the summer months ...with no problems, I'll recommend the Legend boat any time

Add me to the Legend Backers. I have 1993 Legend 165 Sportfish with a 4 stroke 40 on it. I have also fished Lake Ontario for salmon but have to watch it. Bay of quinte normally no problem but you can get some big waves there too. No problems with th boat at all. Only major problem in 10 years was the stader (not sure if spelled right) in the motor went and cost me $700 ......

I too have a legend and no complaints here. It has been a great boat, but seriously thinking of putting her up for sale. Its a 1994 18.5 footer with a 100hp mariner. Let me know if your interested mtepfenhart@lear.com

Having gone through the new boat buying ordeal last year let me throw in my 2 cents. I started out looking at Legend, I didn't feel the quality was as good as some of the big names like Lund etc. The other problem was that as advertised they seemed like a great deal, but by the time you added stuff that was standard on other makes and upgraded from the stock 25hp two stroke they were no cheaper.

After a lot of looking around I bought a Princecraft 162 Pro Series. It's big enough for the bay but still easy to trailer to and launch on smaller lakes. The other thing is a new boat is a big investment and you really have to feel comfortable with the dealer. We talked to a lot of marinas between Kingston and Toronto and ended up buying from Big Lake Boats in Cobourg. They were easy to deal with, fair on price and seem very approachable after the sale.

Good point about the upgrades. One thing I noticed with the legend advertisements is the packages are almost always under powered. Once you upgrade to the bigger motor the price is in the same range of the more popular models. A friend of mine bought an "as advertised" legend package and was very dissappointed that he could barely get it on plane. When he went back to the dealer to complain the answer was you have to upgrade the motor. He wasnt told up front that the power was on the low side. In Belleville one of the better dealerships here is J & P Marine. They sell Smokercraft/Yamaha. And everyone that I have talked to who bought a boat from them always said they are good guys to deal with.http://www.jpmarine.reach.net

One thing that hasn't been mention is where your fishing. If the bulk of your fishing is on Lake Erie or Ontario and the BOQ beam is everything.
Years ago I had a 14' Springbok with a 62" beam, great boat for small lakes but a real rollercoaster if the wind came up on BOQ.

If I was buying a rear-tiller I'd look at the Crestliner Alaskan, it's 17' long and about 100" at the beam. I think it's the perfect boat for big water.

I visit Quinte only a couple times a year but I would recommend at least a 17 footer. I have a 1775 Lund Pro-V Deluxe with a 115HP Intruder and it has never disappointed me even in the bays 6 footers. Lund had a 16 and 1/2 footer Pro-V at one time but I think the 1775 is the smallest now. You may be able to find a used one. Pro-V have double plated bottoms and are built to take the bigger waves. Aluminumcraft have the same type of hull re-enforcement. A quality fiberglass Walleye boat would be even better. My fav is the Ranger Fisherman series. If I ever win a lottery that would be my choice. A 20 footer with 250 hp. By the way I have a 14 foot Lund WC. Its a tough boat but I wouldn't be caught dead out on BQ with it. I agree with the legend boys! I have a 169 excalibur with a 60 4 stroke and its the best boat I've owned. It can handle anything that quinte can throw at it.

legends are underpowered, decent boats.

but if you want to power your legend properly, might as well buy a lund or crestliner.

still can't figure out why people buy new.

for under 10 grand i got a four year old lund, 17 foot, with a 4 stroke 50hp yammy.

why would i settle for a 16 foot legend, with a 40 or less, for the same price. or if i wanted a quality boat, a 15 foot lund, with a 25hp for the same price!
