Well having just recently found this site I've decided to make my first of hopefully many posts.

Went out last weekend (19-20th) targeting some of the big back bay largemouth that post up in the muscote bay slop. I fish around the south end of Big Island mostly when I head out to this part of the bay, its a great place for punching and other slop fishing techniques and honestly some of the biggest largemouth myself and my father have caught has been out of muscote. We launched around 7:00am and fished until about 11:30am. Sadly the bass bite wasn't nearly as hot as I was hoping it would be, having landed 5 or 6 sub 2lbers. However if you enjoy a little "trash" fishing every once in awhile for a different fight - The gar were going crazy behind Big Island. I'd read about using a nylon rope for catching them and after several missed hook sets on an old 8 inch floating rapala original, i decided to cut apart one of our docking ropes. Needless to say we landed several decent gar, measuring in well over 1 meter. Spotted several big bowfin as well. They were being as pesky as the bass, maybe some cut-bait might have provoked some strikes.

I know most people think of gar and bowfin as trashy nuisance fish, but once you get past the smell they put up one hell of a fight and show. I'm thinking of taking my niece out to this spot to see if I can't get her hooked in a couple.

Welcome to the board, it's always nice to have a fight on the end of the line, they don't always have to be eaters
Cheers Rob

for the eaters I walk 5 minutes from home and do some night time shore fishing off the myers pier lighthouse. Just after sundown, easiest limit of your life.

Welcome to the board - thanks for sharing your fishing and especially the gar stuff, someday I'll see one and have a chance to fish for it.

Thanks for the post and welcome aboard. I second that on the gar, I know a few good spots on the bay for them. I use a worm harness just below the surface, the smaller the hooks the better.
