I headed out fishing last evening and learned a very expensive lesson!
I attached my new 16lb torpedo weight and X4D PROBE to the rigger and sent it down fishing. I use walker releases on my scotty riggers! When I stopped my rigger, it straightened the split ring on the bottom of the snap swivel of the release. Never again will I use a walker release between my probe and main rigger line. I do like walker releases, because of the consistency you get with setting the release. Upon inspection of my other rigger and release I noticed that the split ring is bent as well. I have been running a 15lb weight on it. These releases are only a month old so I just don't think they are rated for pulling big weights around.

I'm not sure what walker releases are rated for, and maybe I should have checked that out. But I will not be running walkers anymore.
Just a heads up!
Cheers

Ouch!!! If. It makes you feel any better there are probably 1000s on the bottom of Lady O. I've seen at least 5 go to Davey Jones's locker myself.

One more thing, I will never touch the probe rigger when fishing upon another's boat for that very reason.

I also used Walkers last year and sent 2 balls to the bottom!!! Scott suggested I switch to Cannon's terminal tackle , and it was a great decision for me to switch . The Cannon terminal tackle is heavy duty and all around built a lot better and strong. So far ( knock on wood ) no issues , and I am running 12 pound torpedo and probe as well.

Been using the cannkn terminator kit on our boat and never ever had any issues. Thats over 20 seasons. By far the best for down riggers and big cannon balls.

I had that happen 2 seasons ago with a Walker style clincher release. luckily no probe lost....just the ball. I have drilled out the cheap Chinese made snaps and replaced them with 200lb swivels held in place by a screw/lock nut.

I marked my GPS as soon as it happened. Thankfully The batteries were fairly fresh in the probe. I was able to drive over my marks and pin point it's exact location, because my headunit would pick up the signal. I was reading the fishawk book, it says there is a 77degree cone angle. Which we figured we have to pretty damn close to be directly above it. I dove down Friday evening, but it was to dark and I needed some light. I called a buddy and set it up for saturday morning with some lights. and went down and got it within 10mins! Couldn't have been happier!! Fish On!
