We have all been asking for a unit that works as a GPS as well.

With a $1500 price tag, if anyone tries this out, let me know how it works. That is a crazy price.

My friend bought this unit with the ice transducer and battery and a second transducer for the boat. It works very weel for ice fishing in flasher mode. It has more power than my Ice45 but it does have some drawbacks. It chews through a battery very fast so it pays to have a spare, also when fishing in flasher mode turn the background to black instead of white and turn the brightness down to conserve battery. Second issue is the screen size is smaller when using flasher mode and there is a slight delay in the screen refresh compared to the ice45, will this make a huge difference, no, I use both and you will catch just as many fish. For the price it is very versatile and can switch between your boat and ice fishing very quickly and costs half what the other model does.

Last year I tried ice fishing with my Lowrance Elite 5 Chartplotter Combo from my fishing boat. I used the boat transtucer and powered it with a motorcycle battery. It has the flasher mode, but I preferred the graph page. It worked great. So this year, I have purchased the Lowrance Ice Pack for the unit. Hope the battery lasts.

I have the 688 on my boat and will be using it for icefishing in flasher mode, previously i used the HB 345 on the ice and it was great, any decent sonar will have a real time display so dont buy into the flasher gives you a faster reading crap. 20 years ago yes but now there is no difference. Ive done side by side comparisons with similar priced vex and HB flashers and no difference at all with the 345. Even the traditional flasher companies have been switching over to LCD for their top models.
The one benefit the traditional flasher has is the larger flasher "screen" compared to the LCD models but my eyesight is still good, atleast for a few more years, and I had no problems with the 3.5" screen on the 345. The 688 will be a nice improvement with the 5". That marcum unit is pretty slick looking but cant see paying that much for a icefishing set up.

hottubjim,
I bought the lowrance portable pak for an HDS 5 and I found battery life was 6-7 hrs. One thing you can do to save battery life is turn down the brightness.
