Trying to get a new rig set up for trolling for walleye. First time out today and can't get down to 1.5-2 mph. Has anyone had dealership lower in gear idle? Is trolling plate best option? Thanks

I would get drift socks. Less permanent and u won't forget they are out and take off and bend your plate. Not that I have ever done that haha

I've got a set of Nauticus Smart Tabs on my 16ft. In the "up" position they get me up on plane faster and in the "down" slows me right down. Worth every penny.

Just checked Barrie Cabbalas and they don't carry it in stock there or supposedly at any other stores in Canada. Read the 75 responses on this product on line and 95% were very positive. Can order this plate on line for $99.00 U.S. which is on sale now.
I like the feature that you do not need a rope to release or put down the plate. I have used a happy troller for years on different boat and motor packages and have bent the plate quite a few times because of a bad releases but it is well worth it.

Sorry it's taking a bit long to get the 90 etc rigging done but Joel at ITroll has assured me that it is in the works. By that I mean the Itroll http://www.itroll.us is your answer to all of your trolling speed patterns. You have total control of the amount of throttle and time pattern as you also control the step increase. We have the kits for almost all of the kickers out there up to 30 hp and most manufacturers up from there. Check it out!!! It's the best tool on my boat and my boat is fully rigged. http://www.itroll.us or check it out on youtube Im not shire of the link but just search Itroll

What year is your E Tec there is a big difference If you are running an older E then I would strongly suggest that you not. Go put a small kicker on you will save yourself a ton of headaches and money because I have been running E-Tecs since 2005 and I know! I hope you are running XT100 and that you are a member of www.etecownersgroup.com. you will find all the info you could ask for there.

I too have never done that LOL. But the trolling plate does work great though, my friends boat trolls at 3mph, with trolling plate it is 1.2mph. Just put something on top of your throttle to remind you it is down.

I run a trolling plate on my 90 hp and it works extremely well. I purchased mine at Bass Pro for 90.00 approximately 3 years ago..

Sam

The itroll will not help you since you motor won't troll down as slow as you want.

Trolling plate and drift socks will work for you no problem to get down slower. Extended trolling on a bigger 2 stroke is not the greatest for the motor long term. The best setup is to add a kicker or an electric system to troll down slower without running the big motor. Also the most expensive (of course!). The gas savings of going to a kicker will probably be substaintail though...added a 4 stroke 9.9 kicker this year so I don't have to troll on the 200 2 stroke and probably paid for the half the motor the first year in fuel savings. Also, having a backup is always good.

A kicker is good for lot of things but $$$ savings are questionable.

Evinrude tests of a 90 Etech on a 17' Starcraft super fisherman showed that at idle (700 rpm) the boat would troll at 0.10 gph so a full day of trolling would cost 5 or 6 bucks in gas.

Unless Evinrude is lying, a kicker would only save you about $2 or $3 per day.

http://www.evinrude.com/Content/Pdf/neu ... /PE657.pdf

Even my 150hp Optimax will troll at 0.4 gph in actual use (as read from on smartcract guages).

I would seriously question any data from an engine maker on gas consumption. You just do not know what the assumptions and conditions are that go into that data. Only a real world test will work. It is much more likely 0.2-0.3 GPH...if you fish often that difference will add up. A 6 or 8 pushing a smaller aluminum will be like 0.05GPH. The money savings are not a question, they are a fact. All there is to discuss is magnitude which depends on many, many things.

I'm speaking from personal on the water actual fishing experience with a 200 and 9.9 big/kicker combo vs just a main motor...the savings will not be as much on a 90 but will still be there.

Also, do you want to put lots of ultra low RPM hours on an expensive main motor or all those hours on a cheap kicker? Plus the backup capability.

Back to the original posters questions...the best answer, in my opinion, is add a kicker but there are many options, all outlined here. Choose what works best for you.
