Think it will work?

I had an idea to try this so what the heck. It is way too easy when weighing a walleye in a boat to puncture or rip a gill when the hook on the weighing device is slid up in, especially when the fish is wiggling or shaking. I know we all care about this fishery so i figured i would give my idea a try.

1. first i bought a 3 dollar mesh laundry bag from wal-mart.

2. i cut the strap and the cord that came on it off and poked a hole in each corner.

3. then I put some cord through the hole a put a washer on the backside and tied a knot in the cord so it didnt pull through the washer. Then i took superglue and reinforced all around the mesh holes.

4. i then ran the cord from long end to long end of the bag on each side.

5. i weighed the bag dry, and i weighed it soaked. 2 - 5/8 oz dry and 5 - 3/8 wet.

We invested in the Berkley gripper with the built-in scale and that works great. You can control the fish in the net, lift it out and weigh the fish. Easy Peasy!!!!!!!!

Some would say that the mesh might cause a loss of the slime coating on the fish, that could lead to disease ---- Some would but not me.

great idea Shark, I've thought about building something just like that for weighing big fish, as I'm under the impression that the vertical hold required for conventional hook weighing systems is bad for the fish's internal organs. I think as long as the mesh is wet it wouldn't harm the fish's slime coating any more than a new or a boat deck.

That walleye looks much bigger than 3lbs...better calibrate your scale :lol:

Dont think you have to worry about the weight of the mesh wet or dry. Hang the bag on the scale hook first then turn on the scales and it should set to zero.

I will be honest Dan I did not know that, even sweeter. I was just thinking this whole process would be less traumatic on the fish. They do have a tendency to thrash a little when held in the vertical position.

Of course it will work and much safer on fish, I absolutely hate to see fish hanging by the gill plate or jaws. I can't believe it's good for the fish. I hope your idea catches on. I have been using an old fishing net (just the mesh) but I must admit I rarely weigh a fish.

I think that will work just fine. If the bag is wet first slime coat loss should be minimal, and the entire fish is supported horizontally. Much better than hanging vertical, especially for larger fish. Good idea.

We just weigh the net with the fish in it, but that looks pretty slick...might craft one up myself.

This style of weight bag has been in the bass-world for the past few years, and we use this exact system when weighing smallies. Smallmouth go bat-sh!t-crazy (as they should) as soon as you try to put the weigh hook in their gills.......the bag is the only way to go.

If you're going to try to weigh a big, physically strong 7,8,9,10 lbs fish, you have to make it safe for the fish. Great idea!

That should work.

I have been weighing fish in the net and subtract the weight of the net for a long time. Same concept...

When I go float tube fishing, I don't take a net - too much to drag around. What I do is use a 2 foot fluoro leader with a two finger loop where it meets the main line. When I get the fish close, I slide the scale into the loop and give 'em a quick weigh and then back in the water for hook removal.
