Hi everyone, I have noticed a few of the guys are fishing downriggers for fall walleye. We have had good success trolling boards but have not tried using our riggers.

Any suggestions on how deep to run the balls and line lengths? I know any deeper then 30+ the walleye don't have much chance of surviving which is way we typically just fish boards with deep cranks.

Thanks

I Also only run deep baits. If I was to use my down rigger on a shallow running bait, I would take the baits depth, subtract from 30 and have my max depth for the down rigger ball. IE if the bait was good for 7 feet (30 - 7 = 23) I would not lower the ball past 23 ft.
Cheers Rob

I've tried running lures off my new riggers a few times so far this year and haven't caught one yet off the rigger ... If marking fish at a certain depth I put the rigger to a depth that in conjunction with the bait I'm using will get it to the depth where we were marking ... but haven t had any luck with the Cannons... I m not even bringing my riggers this weekend I m going to run all of the lines off of in line planer boards and will be using snap weights if I need to get down deeper than what the lures are running at ...

We only have one set of boards so we used downriggers with success on Nov 27th and Dec 7th. Back 100 ft from ball, as long as they have a little action ball wouldn't be a factor. 12 pounder and one 8 + caught on downriggers down 10 and 15, one 10.6 caught and 8 + on planer boards. Video below.

Worked for us, go for it.

Thanks guys, if we can get out this weekend might have to try a good old trusted Williams spoon on the rigger.

Not a expert at this, but was told to run the bait above the fish marked, told walleye look up to hunt
Seasons Greetings
