My question is this.... I use my 16yr old snowmobile to go from the shore out to my hut for transportation back and forth. I have no insurance or sticker on it due to the fact that since it's 800cc , my insurance company and others all want around 400$ a yr.
I thought that to ride a sled on a frozen lake you didn't have to have insurance, but I guess I'm wrong. This is what I don't understand?? A boat doesn't require insurance to go on the lake!! A car /truck loses it's insurance once you drive on a lake!!!! Why does a snowmobile require insurance to ride on lake?? Is there something for ice fishing that exempts this?? Thanks for any input.

I know vehicles classed as off road...four wheel drive, do not lose their insurance when on the ice.
However if your car goes through the ice, you are sol...

You make a good point. The only thing I can help you with, give TD a call for your insurance. My home and auto company wouldn't insure my ATV
TD cost was $300.00 for a year.

Here you go. This is why we leave ours at the farm

Unless you are driving your registered snowmobile on your own property or you are a resident of northern Ontario that is exempt, you must have a validation sticker on your registration decal. You must carry your driver’s licence or MSVOL and evidence of your vehicle’s registration at all times and show it to a police or conservation officer when asked.

Snowmobiles are only permitted on public highways when directly crossing. In specific circumstances, snowmobiles can operate on the non-serviced portion of some highways. Local municipalities also have authority to pass bylaws governing the use of snowmobiles on highways under their jurisdiction.

There is an annual renewal fee for the sticker. Place the sticker in the upper right corner of the decal.

You must also have liability insurance to drive your snowmobile off your own property. Carry the insurance card given to you by the insurance company for the snowmobile, and show it when a policeor conservation officer asks for it. If someone else uses your snowmobile with your consent, you are both responsible for any penalties, damages or injuries that may occur.

As per the MTO.

I don't think being 4wheel drive gets you coverage....I'm pretty sure that is for off road vehicles like ATVs and sleds that are plated off-road. I would triple check with your broker before taking a truck out...

Off road means exactly what it says...frozen lake is off road, logging or bush roads.

Had a buddy goes through the ice 2 years ago and his insurance covered him. He had a 4 wheel drive truck and his broker stated if it wasn't a 4 wheel drive he would not have been covered.

Then again, always a good idea to check with your insurance broker.

It sounds like your wife will be the one driving the new vehicle after the funeral and insurance company pays up. Lmao

I don't think I could get far enough from shore on this much ice to drown....besides I've been watching ice road truckers all season so I should be ok.

I'm not saying there could never be any coverage for this.
Just saying check with your broker to make sure...there are so many different companies, and so many different policies and so many exclusions, that I would take nothing for granted.
Especially if you have an expensive truck.
