Bud,

The general section of the regulation describes a spring gaff which is an illegal fishing device. The definition of a spring gaff appears to describe the device you have shown. That may make the Jaw Locker illegal in Ontario. Check it out before you purchase one of these.

I seen this advertised in the latest edition of In-Fisherman magazine. 2015 Ice Fishing Guide. It says in the ad that it is legal in all Canadian Provinces.

This has been covered before someone said they spoke to a c.o and got email back saying THEY ARE LEGAL to use here in ontario. It doesn't meet the actual spring loaded definition.

It could have possibly been on the Simcoe forum I seen this topic of legality was covered for this device.

I made a device that is very similar and have been checked while using it and had no issue. It is essentially a downrigger and not a spring gaff. Great little device but there aren't many species I fish for where I want the hook to set immediatley upon a strike.

Never used one but they are suppose to be great especially for species that will spit a bait fast. Would love to hear some reports with people that have experience using them.
And yes they are legal in ontario it's been asked and answered 100s of time.

Most common ice fishing question... Are jawjackers/automatic fisherman legal? Yes

Most common open water question... Can you take a picture of an oos or over/under slot fish? No

Thanks, they look similar to a downrigger clip release, I didn't know If I could make something. But they are 47 bucks delivered to the house so I got 1 comin!
I thought the most common ice fishing question was "How's the ice????"

I have used these .. by using a small slip bobber you can create a bit of slack to allow the fish time to bite down.. worked good on pike, splake and crappie...

I spoke directly to a MNR C.O. about this, as I built one. The basic point he made was that as long as it's the action of the rod that is setting the hook you are fine. Just another one of many grey areas in the regs

Tylercurt is that some type of a release you have rigged up there??? A 9' rigger rod would really set the hook in one of those rod holders!!
