I'm sure most of us have heard or read somewhere to not hold a fish vertically due to possibly damaging the organs of the fish. The topic only seems to come up with Muskie and Pike though. I'm sure it must have the same effect on Walleye.
Reading a prior post on here about weighing fish kinda made me think of this.

Any opinions??

Am thinking it must have the same affect. If you hold it vertical the organs closest to the tail would prob have more weight on them then usual. I think it would be like putting yourself horizontal on a 2x4 and trying to balance yourself. Would hurt. Just not sure if it would have long term affects.

Prob won't chance it. I always carry a little rubber mesh bag that I put the fish in so he or she stays horizontal. Now I just need a fish worth weighing. Haha. Just my 2cents. Good subject, maybe it will help save more fish.

I really like the mesh bag idea and will be purchasing one because it does seem the safest way. Thank you for posting this

You are right, it stretches the internal organs, the reason you hear this more with pike and muskie is because of their size, the bigger the fish the more the internal organs weigh the more stress on the fish. Always best to hold them horizontal if you can but i think for perch, crappie and other smaller fish it isn't an issue.
