If you download the navionics app to your I-phone and are from the States do you get a roaming fee charged when using it in Canada? Thanks, Steve

Any app using data in a foreign country , I would say yes without officially knowing

As long as you are tracking your location, there would be a fee associated with it for the data being used.

The GPS function on your phone will work without using your cell phone carrier. GPS uses satellites not cell towers. If you download the map to your phone @ home, you can turn your cell carrier off & the phone should still track you & locate you on the map you already downloaded. Hope his helps!

I agree, if you download the map location ahead of of time, the app ony needs the iPad or iPhone gps. There would be no charges. Your cell could be turned off and it will work. BATMAN

Not true . The cell phone uses the cell towers to triangulate location not satellite . An american user would be charged data use or roaming . You would need to put phone in airplane mode (meaning no cell use) then get an antenna like the Bad Elfe or dual XGPS 150 . This antenna lets you access satellite on phone or i pad without cell service . I have the ups and it works well . The only place i have problems is when it s in my boat under my stereo equipment . I think its the magnets in the speakers .

Once you download the Navionics app and the charts for the areas you will be using it, the app does NOT USE DATA during normal use.

So if you download the app and the charts on wifi or in the USA using the app in Canada WILL NOT use data.

Your phone has a built in GPS receiver and uses that for location, speed, etc. Turn data off when roaming on your phone, putting your phone in airplane mode also disables the GPS receiver and you need that to get GPS location.

I have used my Navionics app in Florida, Zanzibar and Costa Rica with no roam charges.

I use my Navionics app all the time in Canada and US without using any data. If you're IPad is cell capable it does have a gps chip build in.
You can tke Scott answers 100%

I have used the gps on my cell phone up north and way back in the bush. No cell towers around. Zero signal showing on my phone however it picked up my gps position perfectly so I can attest to this as well. No data would be used for gps position

Exactly what I said!!! Thanks for the backup to those that have also used it. Even other map features can continue to track you as long as the maps are already downloaded. I do this every year as we travel to Chapleau fishing. You lose cell coverage all the time but the GPS tracks your progress regardless.

The guys are correct if you download the map of the area of interest before you go to Canada and you turn data off, you will NOT be charged roaming or data fees. I was there just a week ago and I did just that. GPS does not require data. What requires data is when you ask the Navionics to download a new map or area. BTW, that application is sweet to say the least. I use the GPS on my Humminbird 581i as well as the Navionics app to mark spots.
