MEN CONVICTED FOR TRANSPORTING LIVE WALLEYE

BELLEVILLE - Plainclothes Conservation Officers from the Ministry of Natural Resources Peterborough District, netted two men moving live walleye several hours after the season opened.

Steven Walsh, 37, of Shannonville, and Ronald Meilleur, 36, of Frankford, were each fined $1,000 for unlawfully transporting live fish.

Court heard investigators received a complaint about some large walleye caged in a cold water creek, north of Trenton before the walleye season had opened. This creek has no walleye.

The officers found the spot and kept watch. At 2 a.m., May 3, 2003, opening day for walleye season, the officers stopped Walsh and Meilleur transporting a fish.

Justice of the Peace Sam Cureatz heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on May 11, 2004.

The Ministry of Natural Resources is concerned with the unlawful movement of fish in Ontario. They urge the public to report natural resources violations to local ministry offices or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477

Do you think it was going to be put on the scales for the Walleye World Derby?

Some one should check to see if either of these guys had a ticket and ban them from the derby in the future

Good Point Eye-Tracker,

Couple years ago a guy entered a fish in the wrong derby on Saturday and returned Sunday with almost identical fish, said he caught them in Hay Bay - south shore 30' of water - Spot doesn't exist.

Always thought that was fishy- I'd bet you're right that they had tickets for the derby.

Glad they got nailed.

It is interesting to see what a person will do to win.

Fishing contests of various sorts in the US has seen some creative techniques deloyed with some equally creative "counter measures". DNA analysis is something that can be used to separate strains, etc. I have also read about some older weight, alternative techniques like using ball bearings, or noticing the net markings on fish.

Thanks for posting ths Superdad. It is good to see them prosecuted and get their names posted, etc.. My congratulations to the MNR enforcement staff that were involved in this action.

Regards
Don Stokes
