Are ATVs safe to bring to the Bay

I am scheduled for a charter on the Bay of Quinte this Saturday. I have an ATV that I use for ice fishing and was going to bring it to the Bay.

The guide mentioned that there were "fluctuating" ice conditions. So, I wanted to ask the members if they have brought their ATVs out on the ice and if they thought it was generally safe.

I understand that there are places that may not be frozen and are unsafe to travel. What I want to know is if anyone has found unsafe areas that surprised them as being unsafe. Or, areas that had 10 inches of ice when they walked out, that turned to 3 inches in a short distance.

If you are using an ATV on the ice, I would be interested in your thoughts. Thanks guys.

Depends on where ya go. The 'Bay' is a huge chunk of water stretching from Trenton to almost kingston. Some places are of little concern like my place off Hay Bay part of the Bay plenty of Ice everywhere I have been, othe spots like the narrows in Bellville or Deseronto can be a lot more iffy with the currents. Narrow it down, where are you going?

We are going to Belleville and/or Deseronto.

If I stay close to shore, will that make a difference.

Your charter/guide will be able to tell you best, as only they know where you are going. They might be bringing you to a high current area that is not suitable for quads. All the outfitters I have seen have their own mode of transportation to get their clients out. Talk to your guide , if they can't answer your questions it would be cause for concern.

The big reason I go with guides is because they know the ice conditions very well as they are on the water daily and usually are familiar with the body of water. Most likely they will be using a quad to get around or if not either should you. Not sure of conditions were your heading tho..
