Quinte Fishing

Hello eveyone, This is my first time posting on this board but I frequently read the posts here to hear some great fishing stories. I just wanted to compliment all of the regulars here on the board. All of you are so kind to share your knowledge and experience with everyone. I am going to try fishing Picton Bay this weekend for the first time with my recently acquirer fishing boat. For years, I used to be a boat rental junkie. I just hope the weather co-operates.

I wanted to ask generally how far back should I run lures from the boat when fishing Picton Bay? I will be running clown coloured swithwicks in the shallower water and Manns stretch 20's in the deeper sections.
Is anyone going this weekend? Or are you all getting ready for the action next weekend.

I will tell you all my success this year has been longlining or in-line planers at least 125 ft back. I've had them inside this distance quite often with little or no luck. Then the light goes on oh yes! let out more line a little thick in the smokestack sometimes:!:

Your lure selection sounds fine. Just have patience, put in the time and hopefully a little luck will go a long way!

I also wanted to find out how rough can the waves get in Picton Bay. I will be out in my 16 ft Smokercraft w/ a 40 hp but it is not a deep V. Will I still be safe to venture out to Thompson's Point or should I try to stay in the bay area?

Keep an eye and ear open for weather forecasts. I have a 17 ft Lund with an 80 hp (not at all a big boat for Quinte) and keep a close eye on the weather. Wind can also whip up quickly. You would not want to be caught in heavy winds with your boat. The bay right in Picton is usually manageable with some wind but it can also whip up pretty good depending on wind direction. If not much wind, then yes, head over to Thompson's and scoot around to different spots. The bigger open water by the cement plant can get very rough.
If heading over to Thompson's, you might want to try some jigging if the water is nice and calm. Lots of guys troll over there too. Use good judgement, be safe and good luck!!
