My dad is travelling from Windsor this week so we can spend if weather is nice the weekend on the water around the bonnet fishing for Lakers(and what ever else will bite). We are looking for a decent free boat launch if possible. We will be coming from Peterborough so we are also looking for one that is close enough to drive without spending an hour on the water getting to and from the area. If anyone can help that would be great.

I might add I've gone from Wellers bay to Lake O twice this week and like mentioned earlier there are no markets out and if not familiar with channel it is a nightmare . When you first enter the channel from Wellers heading to lake you want to be in the middle or more left then middle . There are rocks on the right , stay in the middle left until you can see the lake and then you need to head a little to the right and then you need to be real tricky at this point ! The channel then goes real close to the rocky beach and then runs along the rock break wall out to Lake Ontario . Like I said if not familiar where the markets are usually it can be tricky .

How far is the run from Wellers Bay to the Bonnet? I've always launched at Wellington but that can be a long run in any kind west or southwest wind. Wondering if Weller's was any shorter.

There really isn't a lot of difference between Wellers or Wellington. But if anything, west winds will make bigger waves out from Wellers, south winds will make bigger waves out from Wellington.

Be well aware, if you get a strong westerly wind, getting on or off the big lake from the Wellers channel can get hairy to say the least as the area out front of the channel is shallow and the waves build up in that area real quick. (I'll bet we could start a whole thread on wild rides in just that area)

As always, check the weather carefully and go on the days when the lake lets you. That's not necessarily the same as the time you have to go.

If your going from peterborough like I do, The easiest place to launch is gosport in brighton. Its $5 bucks. It's roughly 12 miles from there, and brighton bay is well marked. By the time you drive off the 401 and to Wellers bay or wellington you could of already had your boat launched and halfway there by then. As of right now the weather looks great to make the run out there saturday or Sunday. But keep an eye on the weather as we all know it can change very quickly and make sure you check it before you leave port just to be safe. Good luck!! And maker a Laker!!
