Quinte Fishing

Here on vacation with the family for the week, left Wellington around 5:30, back at 8:30, so not much time on the water, wanted to head out to the Bonnet just to get a feel for the water out there try to find bait and hooks.
I usually fish Western Lake Ontario for Salmon, so I'm not use to the shoals and depth changes.

Whats the pattern you guys use to look for bait? My temp prob showed 58 degrees around 85-95 feet down, current didn't seem to bad at those depths.

Stuck to mainly 120+ feet of water, marked some hooks and bait but no takers.
I was between Bonnet shoal and Bonnet Island mostly in that areas where it goes from 90 to 170 fow

Are there bows our here also? What about walleye, would Lake Erie methods work out here?

Left this morning around 6:30.

Fished between Palen bank and the bonnet.
2 knock offs early, then a 25lb Chinook around 9:30.
Blue atomik fly with monkey puke spin doctor, 95 feet down over 140, today temps were 58-61 @ 85-95 feet down
Other rod was a watermelon spoon, nothing off it.

Marked nothing south of Palen bank, most hooks marked between palen and bonnet.

Lots of streakers checking out the fly.

We found the same thing on Sunday. We hit one early morning just north of Palen and then went 3-8 kms southwest from there. We marked almost nothing after that. All bait seemed to be in 70-80 FOW and in tight to the shoals. Sounds like we should have stayed in closer.

25lbs Chinook, I'm impressed.

It's been a bit slow this year. The last 2 times i fished Wicklow we got one each day. 18 and 25lb kings. And a few small bows.

The Bonnet is a good place in July but when August rolls around try places farther south. We have
nick-named shoals out there like the Mushroom, Haystack, Dogbone and Elbow. These are the structures to fish for kings in August. Kings usually stop feeding around the first of August because of the drive to get back to the tribs where they were born for spawning and their preferred water temps are less important, but I still try to get the temp & speed probe in 42 to 47 degree F water. This is where you will be more consistent and put multiple kings in the box.

I occasionally run spoons spring and fall but seldom run them in the summer months. Reason being that it is difficult to find a spoon that has the proper action when we are running flashers at the required slower speeds. There are a few like the DW mags or Warrior mags that have good action below 2.3 mph down speed.
