Walleye Tourneys

Posted this on a couple of sites.....Why is it we have no "Big Leauge" Walleye tournaments around this area? Is it because the Bass are more plentiful and easier to catch? We do have a pretty good Walleye Fisheries though they can be hard to find at times. I would think a tourney in prime time could attract a bunch of Walleye guys....thoughts

I completely agree with this. I love walleye fishing and competing would make it that much more interesting on the bay instead of always bass fishing. I fish every walleye tournament there is in all the trailer park tournaments

I wouldn't be a fan. Too delicate of a species. Walleye don't release like bass will. I think the bay has just enough small tournies personally

The Kiwanis Derby attracts around 5000 every year. That one aside, I completely agree with LandShark. There's already enough pressure put on them throughout the entire year. You simply don't see that many boats on the Bay for opening of bass like you do for opening of walleye and you couldn't count the amount people ice fishing for walleye on a single weekend. A big league tourny would just add to all that IMO.

Im thinking more of Lake Ontario than the Bay...July or august when the big fish are in the lake...at least i never fish the bay in the summer

Those fish that are in the lake are the fish that are in the Bay in the fall. Not just Quinte but other spawnng grounds in the northeast corner of Lake Ontario. To my knowledge the link is the last "major" tourney that was fished on LO. If I recal the weather and waves were brutal and two locals smoked the competition.

Those days are done now Mike , with all the laws about crossing the border , reporting in and transporting wild game they wouldn't be able to fish that spot , I do remember that series and seeing them at the island , I think it would be hard to get a full field for a late summer tourney with the unpredictable weather , gone are the days when the best prepared would challenge for the win , :roll:

Come on Frank your not going to let a little 6 ft wave stop you ,,,,,are you ? All you have to do is run 15 miles out in the lake , its not far :lol:

What about a fall league run out of picton? I've always thought if it was priced right could draw a good turn out.

I'm reading some of the replies and there is mention that Walleye are a fragile species and don't release well...possibly not if in a live well all day and then transported back to a weigh in...i don't know...however you would think these larger walleye tourneys have done the research and found this to be viable. I don't keep fish myself and actually don't know many anglers that do but I can tell you that when the fishing is good on the community spots I rarely see more than 1or 2 fish that did not survive the release which is unfortunate for sure however I don't consider them wasted as it's the whole cycle of life thing...you always hear about a large number of dead bass after a bass tournament whether it's true or not I have no idea.

There are a lot more bass than walleye, easier population to maintain. I am not sure Jim which larger tournaments you are referring to but i think these other bodies of water that host them have a much more abundant walleye population. Lake Erie for example. They estimate their walleye population is over 20 million. I guess it just scares me .

Lake Erie, and most of the Walleye tournies I've seen (such as the link above), are catch and kill tournies.

PLEASE do not support this type of tournament in the reach!!!!!

Only way I could see this working would be a one fish limit....

HOWEVER, why can't anglers just fish for fun....everyone always wants to make tournaments, exploiting our natural resources for financial gain.

The reach is already MUCH poorer than it was 10 years ago....it doesn't need further harvest of large female walleye.

Erie is the place to be for walleye tournaments.
