I have been fishing for suckers for years now, and have tried telling a few individuals that suckers are a native non garbage fish, that they should respect and throw back unharmed if they don't intend on eating them.
Ok so rather than go on about not killing them, and getting no where like I have before ( must be because I do not work as biologist for a university or the MNR lol) I will just post link for a write up by Matt Miller. He is a senior science writer for the Conservancy.
Pass the education on, Thank you!!!

suckers are great.

best catfish bait on the planet.

keep 'em live in your livewell, then cut in steaks/chunks as needed.

they are also an indicator of eco system health. suckers don't generally run up polluted rivers.
