Just wondering, what size walleye you would keep and eat from the BOQ.

I have heard that they grow faster, which is obvious, in the BOQ. So, while I would not eat a 5 lbs walleye from a small lake, because the meat will not taste good. Usually, these larger walleye have loose flavourless meat.

So, what size of walleye would you keep to eat from the BOQ?

1.5 -2.5 pounds for me. If I'm really desperate for a fish fry then 3-4 pounds would be my max.

Used to... under 5 pounds.. now nothing between sept and may..

Why ??
Bottom line lake ontario walleye feed on gobies, and what do gobies feed on ?? zebra mussles.
and zebra mussles ?? Any thing on bottom, including any thing dumped on bottom over last few hundred years.
Being some one who worked at one of the factory's on the shores of lake ontario for 10 years, i know that chemicals still end up in the lake. Major spills that include fines, don't end up in the newspaper. just a fyi.

I mainly ice fish on back lakes now.

The only difference between back lakes walleye and Lake Ontario walleye are PCB's and Mercury. Back lakes Walters carry high levels of mercury while Lake Ontario walters carry levels of PCB's. Both PCB's and Mercury are found in all walleye. Being that a walleye diet is made up of baitfish (Shad, perch, alewives) there diet also consists of invertebrates. Saying that no matter where u catch Wallys they will have some sort of contaminants in it if your worried about that sort of thing. If anyone is looking for a new wally recipe check the old el Paso fish tacos!!!!!! They will take your tongue for sleigh
Ride!!'mmmmmmmmm

I only keep fish under 5lbs!! Great reply above about the prime breeders and egg makers over 24inch. Always makes my blood pressure rise seeing people making their way off the ice with fish well above 5 pounds or seeing people posting pictures of their 10lb + fish on facebook back at HOME about to clean them. Will never understand it, some people are just clueless.

I kept a 5.5er last winter, and I won't be doing that again. She was full of eggs and the flesh was soft and mushy ( unless I cooked it wrong :o ). I won't be keeping anything over 3pnds from now on.

What was deleted? This is Canada, what happened to free speech? Unless it was an attack on a specific individual or group imo it should be left for everyone to read.

Ah. Missed the second page. Looks like it was an attack. Btw I've been stopped many times on BOQ and on back lakes. Always friendly and never had an issue. Conservation officers should just set up heated shacks and sit at the access points and check everyone coming in. Those who break the rules know how to get around them. Have seen guys come into the access points sit at the shore on their sled with their limit and wait for buddies to show up in a truck. Load it up and head back out so checking those on the ice does not do much good sometimes.
