Our fly in this summer is to a new fairly large lake so rather than waste time experimenting we'd like to take a fish finder with us. Considering weight limitations we need something small that will run off the minimum battery(s). Appreciate any help we can get.

This trip is an outpost fly in, we'll be the only ones on the lake, no guide.

I used to own a portable fishfinder that just had a suction cup transducer that you would just stick on the back on the back of the boat. It was powered by a disposable 6 volt battery (flashlight/lantern battery) The unit was about the same size as an ice fishing flasher. Back then there was no Navionics or GPS. Not sure if there is now though. Maybe give Radioworld a call. If there is something available that you're looking for, I'm sure they'll have it.

Personally I love my fish hunter- fits in your pocket and can be hooked up to your smartphone or tablet using blue tooth. Versatile, built in light if fishing at night so you can see where it is, floats, can cast it out to a location, or just drop in water beside boat, records and tracks location, and it also has an ice fishing setting so it can be used as a flasher. It has a small docking station that charges by a usb. I use it all the time from my kayak and provides a great deal of information.

We use two of these on our fly-ins every year, they work great:

I could be your fish finder if you'd take me!
