I would appreciate any first hand reports of ice forming along with extent and location. BOQ is reportedly at 39 F currently, based on posts by others. Over the past two days, the bays of Simcoe have started to freeze, so it is moving this way. Based on the weather forecast I am making a wild guess that BOQ will start to ice over the next two weeks with safe ice in late January. Ice up in BOQ is extremely hard to predict due to current.

In case you don't live close, here is a resource that gives you the stage of ice development. http://ice-glaces.ec.gc.ca/prods/NAIS25 ... 636730.pdf

According to this data, BOQ is starting to freeze from roughly Belleville to Picton.

Hi all,

First time poster! Great site BTW. My buddies and I had to cancel our first trip to BOQ mid-January because of the lack of ice. We're tinkering with the idea of booking some time in February but my understanding is that the hard-ice season on BOQ is a short one - correct? Worth the wait you think??

I don't know how accurate that radar image is. I have a cottage on Long Reach and there is absolutely no ice here. It's wide open from Deseronto to as far as I can see down the Reach. Try this link instead. http://iceweb1.cis.ec.gc.ca/Prod/page2. ... reat+Lakes

SteelKrazee,

Thanks for the better website on the ice development. A bunch of us are probably chewing our fingernails watching the weather and wondering when it is going to happen. I pushed my trip back two weeks to the first week of Feb and am still not sure what we will have by then.

Colder temps forecasted for next week, if the winds cooperate we might get some ice. I hope.

If you want to get an idea of ice cover without going beyond your computer, go to this site:
http://ge.ssec.wisc.edu/modis-today/index.php

It's not easy to use. Here's what I suggest:
1 click at the top right so you get USA4
2. Look at the state/country boundaries: the US canada boundary is a good reference point, it turns from EW to SW/NE just south of the B of Q
3. you have to click 250M to get a decent level of magnification
4. you have to choose a date where it's not too cloudy
5. with all this done you can see ice cover on B of Q and the larger back lakes

tight lines

Looking at weather forecast for next two weeks, we won't be ice fishing in January. That is going to hurt the local bait dealers and cottage/motel operators. At best maybe a couple weeks in February
