According to the posts on the OOD forum, the man became disoriented and ended up going through the ferry channel.
It doesn't appear to be a case of thin ice, but rather a case of being lost in the dark and going where he shouldn't have.

I realize that this is no consolation to his family, and I feel for them.

The video talked too about how the ice has been so uneven. 10" in one spot and close by 4" in another. Very similar to quinte this year. Condolences to his family
