So I pulled the pin on 4 new inline planer board trolling rods, and was able to pick up 4 used line counter reels locally. The reels came fully spooled with 20 pound power pro braid. I had no intentions of using braid, I purchased a bulk spool of 10 pound Berkley Trilene XT so I can follow the precision trolling app for the plugs I pull and I have some experience trolling with mono, I have no experience trolling with braid, should I try out the braid? or should I just stick with my original plan and restring the reels with mono, all my boards are equipped with the OR18 clips. Just looking for some opinions, I know braid is expensive, I hate to just peel it off and throw it out, but I don't want to be tearing hooks out because of no stretch either. As everyone knows, Bites don't always come easy. Thanks!! I'm sure this topic has been covered on here a time or two before but what the heck, lets try er again.

It's a matter of preference and opinion. I use both more often than not braid. Mono has a lot of stretch so the more line out the harder it is to detect a fish on the board. I've seen 8-10lb fish not pull a board back with mono.

Why not try it first?

The best advice I would give you at this point would be to add 20-30 ft of floro to each set up. The braid will be fine. Just tie a simple Albright knot from the braid to the floro and you are all set.

Run two rods with and two with mono. Do you know what line diameter is of the braid?

If you stick with the braid, you'll have to adjust your "line out" according to the diameter of the braid for the trolling app. No big deal. Add a fluoro/mono leader like mentioned above for a bit of stretch. If you have your heart set on using the mono since you've already bought it, you could always peel the braid off and use it on other reels for different applications if you jig for walleye, or fish for bass etc... I like to use braid for flatline trolling, then you can see the action of the lure through your rod tip. Makes it easy to tell if your lure is fouled up with weeds or if you have a small fish on. There's a few options out there.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I'm gonna run two rods with mono and two with braid as suggested and take it from there, as for the diameter of the braid I believe it is 0.23mm for 20lb power pro, as I'm sure everyone is aware the app has the option to choose 10lb fireline or 10lb mono, 10lb fireline has a diameter of 0.20 mm, anyways I can pretty much guesstimate the "required line out" of the 20lb power pro, it will be between the mono and the fireline but closer to the firelines lengths for lure depths. I run the same set up and keep a couple extra Mono rods handy. The braid is awesome for bottom bouncing and as mentioned watching your lures action cant beat it for that. If you have the trolling bible you should be able to convert the line diameter easily.

Ya we'll see how it goes, give er a good old college try anyways, what about attaching snap weights to braid, is it the same rules as to the inline boards? always do a wrap around the snap so your line is doubled up in the snap??

I never wrap the line on the snap weights. I use the OR16 clips and have never lost one. I also don't wrap the line on the boards with the OR18 clips, I have had them pull completely underwater by big trout and they still won't come off. I will probably get out this weekend if you are free Brent, made it out Sunday and what a beautiful calm day it was.

IMHO I would pull the braid off and go with mono and a 9' flouro leader but that is your call and your $. If you choose to keep the braid for now the action of your rod will be very important otherwise you'll be ripping hooks out of their mouth if the rod is too stiff even with the leader. I have tried all different combinations of line over the years and settled on the Berkley Big Game 12 lb. which is the same diameter of Berkley XT so you get a little more strength and you can use the PT charts. Another option that you may want to consider is the Sunline 16 lb Mono which is also the same diameter as the XT and you have even more strength than the Big Game. I'm actually considering that this year, there are a lot of positive comments out there on the Sunline. Tied to the mono I use 15 lb or 20 lb flouro depending on what the set-up is for the day.
