Just wanted to say thanks to the Napanee Rod and Gun Club for supporting our local fishery. The club stocked 20,000 fall fingerling brown trout at Finkles Park and Amherst Island last year and from what I’ve read will continue to support the local brown trout fishery in the future.

This comes as great new to those of us who fish for trout around Kingston. Last year a decision was made by the MNR to discontinue rainbow trout stocking in the Wellington and Kingston area due to concerns with the fish leaving Lake Ontario via the St. Lawrence River. Quebec does not want the trout interfering with the Atlantic Salmon population on the east coast.

The MNR also made the decision to stop stocking brown trout in the Kingston area and to focus all future brown trout stocking in four locations in an effort to create destination fisheries with higher catch rates. I raised concern with these decisions at the time as it seemed like an end for the Kingston & Eastern Lake Ontario trout fishery.

Luckily one of the four future stocking destinations will be the Wellington / Sandbanks area. The number of browns stocked there by the MNR will be increased from around 14,00/yr (10 yr. average) to a target of 41,250 per year, starting this spring. As Al mentioned in another post the fish will be delivered over the next few weeks.

Thanks again to all of those who put in so much of their time and effort to improve the sport we love. Great work guys!

It is nice to see this operating. I am not sure what they have at the present time, but do know they have had both rainbows and brown trout.
