Thinking about setting up a new rod with lead core on it. Looking for recommendations for rods and reels. Actually amount of backing and knots between backing and core as well. How many colors? Was thinking about using 27 lb lead core. Over to you guys and or girls.

Ive been usng the tufline micro lead. I have had no issues and will purchase more when needed.

Rods. I started with old downrigger rods to start. I am now replacing with okuma copper/leadcore rods.

For a full 10 colours 300 yds of 50 lbs braid you will need a 45 series reel .

I would recommend doing it segmented. Reel on your backing, attach 5 colours, braid spacer, 2 colours, braid spacer, 3 colours, floro leader.

This will give you more options with crank baits. And prolong line life using planers

Personally I would stay away from the microlead. If you have tension when reeling the line in it gets spooled onto your reel stretched out, causing it to birds nest when letting it out again. Which weakens the lead. Just stick with regular 27lb
For knots you can slide the sheath back 6" cut the lead, do a couple over hand knots on the leadcore slide your mono inside the sheath and then slide those over hand knots. Down onto where the mono is inside the sheath. For braid backing cut the lead back 6" and do a uni to uni knot or Albright
from the braid to the sheath.
As far as rods and reels and backing it depends what you want it for Walleye or salmon? If it's salmon then 1000' of 50lb power pro then whatever amount of lead you want. Walleye your good with 500' of backing braid or mono. If it's salmon or walleye I would go with 6 or 700 series tekotas.
