How do you guys rig up you finders for Ice fishing, and do you find the colder temps effect the tranducer?
Has anyone had problems with ice building up on the transducer?

any comments would be great.

Northern,

Since the transducer is underwater, you typically
don't have ice build up problems. Ice can build up
on the cable where the air meets the top of the water.
It can be left on the cable since it does not affect the
dept finder operation normally. This ice build up can
usually be broken off with your hand quite easily.

You may experience ice build up if you move from
hole to hole on a cold day.

A tip might be to spray some silicon spray on
the transducer and cable where it enters the water. I
have not needed to do this, so I am not sure these sprays
can degrade a transducer or cable.

I use a Hummingbird Wide eye portable all winter. It is the same as i use in the summer. I just cut an extra hole to put the transducer in. All i do is hand the transducer under the ice, usually wrap the cable around a stick or something to keep it from falling in. Only had the unit freeze up once but it was like -30. Doesn't work as good as a VEX but it does the trick.

You don't need to drill all the way through. Just drill a half hole, fill it with water and set the transducer on the bottom of the hole. It will read through the ice fine and will only freeze on the top of your half hole - easy to remove at the end of the day. Hope this helps!
