Lakers Around Amherst Island?

Hi everyone,

Is it possible to catch Lakers around Amherst Island this time of year? If so, how long do they stay around the area? I would love to get down there in the next 3-4 weeks if possible, but I'm not sure if that would be too late.

I have a 16 footer, so as long as the weather cooperates, I think I'd be okay fishing that area and not having to make a big run offshore.

Thanks for any info you can share!

Lots of lakers on north , west and south sides of Amherst currently. They push out when water warms up so depends on weather. There will always be lakers in the north channel if you have down riggers. They tend to be smaller and are always deep. 80-120 fow. Ask closer to them and u will have more concrete info. You could also look at going to scotch bonnet out from Wellington. 10 mile run from dock but not far from shore.

Last Wed. was very productive for lakers. North west shore near red buoy 55 -60 feet. 16 foot Princecraft.

Very cool, thanks for the info folks! I just looked at my chart and yeah, I think I'd be comfortable going out to the Scotch Bonnet as well (assuming weather cooperates of course!).

I do have downriggers so fishing deeper water isn't a problem. Mainly just unsure about fishing the big lake and making long runs offshore. I'm used to fishing allot of the big lakes in BC that can get really ugly, but you are usually never more than 2-3 miles from shore if you have to head in.

Really hope I can get down there for some trout this year!

Was out around Amherst yesterday. NW corner of the lighthouse. Caught a half dozen lakers 2lbs-10lbs. 80-90 ft down and close to bottom with riggers. Tried shallow and came up dry. No pics sorry.

looks like the winds are going to allow us little guys (14.5 ft lund with a 25 hp Etec) to get out to try for some lakers tomorrow afternoon and evening. If anyone's been out, would love some tips as I've never fished that area before. From the other posts, looks like the NW side in between 60 and 120 feet of water is a good starting point ... will be running different colours of NK spoons, as that's all I have for downrigging!

I'll post my results when I get back.

I was using NK 28's and NK Mag's. Silver Green and Blue Thunder

tks for the advice everyone. i launched at Finkles and started fishing straight across, North side of Amherst in about 90 ft, heading West. wind was a bit worse than i thought but it settled down as the evening approached. marked very little trying in 70 to 100 ft until we reached the NW part of the isl by a lighthouse, then we started marking lots of fish, and hitting them. went 6 for 9, all in the 2 to 5 pound range over about a 2 hour period. half caught on a blue/silver Nastyboy and half on an NK monkey puke. Was a great night out there.

They really seem to be hanging in that location. Pretty consistent.

The entire north channel is loaded but I find smaller year class of fish vs out in the lake.
