Finally had success at Lower Gap last night, went 2 for 3. One at 28 inch (which I released) and one at 22 inch (tonight's supper). I was trolling the SW end of Melville Shoal and the fish finder showed about 10 feet so I thought damn that's getting too shallow, when the big one hit. Killed the motor, brought the big girl in, got her outta the net and unhooked, released the fish, got a hook stuck in my pants, unhooked lure from pants then proceeded to bring in my second line. Fish on !!! WTF? I had spent 5 or 10 minutes drifting in the wind up to that point. I have no idea when it hit. I had the fish near the boat and was reaching for the net. It thrashed at the surface a bit and I guesstimated at 18 inches or so, then it got off.

A second pass produced the eater.
The fish were caught on a deep tail dancer and a berkley flicker minnow. All fish were in less than 12 fow and caught after 9 pm. A beautiful moonlit night but the lake was kinda bumpy. The humminbird sadi the surface water was 73 F.
Tight lines

Does this mean that they will be moving towards Picton Harbor soon? Is there a spot that you can launch at near there? I won't take my tin can from finkle park out there.

Congrats on the success.

You can launch from the public Collins Bay launch. Mapquest Collins Bay Road and follow it and turn west on Bath Road.

Use caution out there. It's big water and changes quick. Collins bay ramp is about 5-6 miles from the shoal. Pick your days and you'll be fine but any wind from north east or anything west or south is ugly quick.

I was hoping for a boat launch near Cressy point or the west side of Amherst Island. I'd rather trailer it over there.

His "lower gap" report is not anywhere near the gap/"upper gap" on charts. Melville shoal is in Kingston. There is a launch at prinyers cove though if you were aiming to fish the gap area.

The Lower Gap is between Wolf IS and the east end of Amherst Is.

A LOOOONG run from Finkles. Collins Bay Ramp is close as is the ramp at Lake Ontario Park in Kingston.

Good fishing there for this time of year, often in late July or August into darkness.

Responding to big mac. Historically things were named based on coming upstream from the Saint Lawrence River. Thus, Lower Canada was Quebec and Upper Canada was Ontario. If you cruise from Kingston to Picton in the North Channel, you look out at big Lake O twice, Lower Gap at east end of Amherst Island, Upper Gap at the west end. And yep, yo gotta pick your weather. If you are fishing Melville Shoal there ain't nothing but deep water between you and Rochester.
