Are down hill skis better than the cross country?

All the pics I see in this post are down hills.. So what's the verdict boys? Which is better, cross contry or downhill?

Downhill most xcountry skis are too narrow

Downhill skis add a lot of weight but they have a smoother bottom and are wider as someone else said. I bought both downhill and cross country skis and was going to try both. I built it with the downhill and never bothered to try the CC's. Some people like the CC's due to the much lighter weight but honestly after you have a hundred pounds of gear loaded up the extra few lbs does not make a difference. with the thicker skis if the snow is heavy enough it sometimes rides right on top. i dont think the cross country would do that.

if you are building one build it high (not too high as it will tip). if it does not ride on top and there is thick snow you end up having to plow through partially just like pulling a utility sled with out the smitty.

When looking for smitty sled skis downhill are probably the easyist to find. Pick the lightest and cheapest. Cross country skis come in 3 main types; racing (too skinny) light touring (still too skinny) and touring, (pretty good) especially if you plan on building a longer smitty.

Hi guy, Yeah 2X6 seems to be the standard, some guys handy with welding equip make brackets that are upside down I shaped and drill holes in the top and bottom for mounting. I have seen tham made from pipe flanges with 6 or 7 inch uprights mount the flange to the ski. many different types, I did see one make from an old roof rack. look on google and type in smitty sleds you will see hundreds.

when using wood risers, whats a good way of attaching the skis?

I flipped the skis upside down and drew a centre line. Figured out where I wanted the risers. I drilled and counter sunk 3 inch screws through the bottom of the skis. Worked well.

Thank you for the tips. Going to start the build after christmas. Hopefully trial it out after this warm weather passes

I can say that comit's sled is sweet I built mine from his drawing and works like a charm and we fish together all the time.
Tim that harness would be sweet for me if your wife is bored
