Just wondering how the weekend was out there. My wife and I were out Friday morning for a bit. Was about 9 inches of ice in 10 ft of water. We managed a few small perch and I believe I missed one walleye.

I tell ya, cleats work good out there. It was pretty slick. I sure hope the temp drops soon Don't want all the ice to go.

Regards

All I can suggest is a bathing suit and life jacket
Even if there is 8" I wouldn't trust it unless I checked every step with a spud.
Sorry I cannot help but I would not take anyone's "safe ice" advice at this time

That IS helping. I'm not looking for a yes, I'm looking for the truth lol. I'm still too new to even trust the ice after checking with a spud. lol.

I walked about 20 yards out today, didn't go any farther because I didn't have a spud with me. There were 4 permanent huts out there and one pop up out near the green buoy. Looked like there was fairly fresh four wheeler tracks heading towards the permanent huts but I couldn't see one on the ice. Hopefully heading out tomorrow, will update after.

I may pick out a spud tomorrow and try also. Is 4 or 5 inches fine even though it's "soft"? Hard spuds every couple of steps? How far out do you need to go to get into some fish? I'm okay with perch for tomorrow haha.

The 20 yards that I walked out it looked like only the first few inches were soft and there was good ice underneath, although I'm not positive on that because I didn't have a spud or auger. Typically I'll go 3-4 hard spuds every few steps to make sure there is solid ice. As for the fish part I'm not too sure, I usually only fish Potters during first ice and don't have much luck.

Cheers and goodluck

Was out yesterday morning. There was 5 inches of solid ice everywhere we drilled (drilled about 10 holes) but there was also lots of small holes where I could spud through with one hit. We could see the holes going out but coming back in after the snow made it harder, biggest one I saw was a couple feet.

If you're heading out be careful it'll be hard to see where the holes are after the snow we got yesterday. I'm giving it a few nights of cold weather before I'm back out.

I'm planning on checking out the ice around 7am tomorrow. Anyone else heading out?

I only went about 400m out but I spudded around and found 5+ inches of good ice consistently with a inch or two of white ice on top. There were still some decent sized holes around so be careful with those! There was lots of foot traffic out there today.

I caught only a bunch of small perch, but was happy to try out the new flasher.
