Fished Fri after work and yesterday afternoon. Fri got 3 and zip on Sat. Yesterday I couldn't believe the number of fish marked and all sizes and no perch but they just weren't interested. Started marking fish about 4 pm with just the odd fish marked but fairly consistent. Then at 5 the fish really started moving with fish showing up every few minutes right to 6pm but not a hit. I was off wagers. The ice was holding at 8" but very soft. Didn't take anything to hand auger a hole. Hopefully we get some cold soon

That's a pretty nice evening! Wish I could've stayed for the Friday eve.
Do you get out and fish that 17-18 ft flat or stay close to where that 16-17 ft break happen?

Fished the 18-19' flat. Went out again this aft. Zippo. The ice is turning soft. Didn't take hardly any effort to pop a hole with the hand auger. Still lots of ice there,8"

That's tragic, and I really don't mean to sound ignorant for asking but, how is it that someone usually dies after falling through, assuming they can swim, and are relatively close to shore/help.

Is it the weight of clothing and boots, etc that pulls you down. Is it current that sweeps someone under the ice and away from the open area? Injury or shock that prevents someone from surfacing?
Trouble climbing out/not able to grip?

I'm asking because I want to do as much as possible to minimize the risk (flotation suit, picks, etc). I'm still very cautious on the ice and I'd rather learn from the forums rather than experience!

All of the above.
I use to think getting out would be no big deal but everything above plays a factor.
I refuse to wear back packs while walking because once your in you can't get them off without submerging basically. You gain about 75lbs of water in your clothes in about 30 seconds.

I can't describe the feeling because I couldn't slow down to think.

I can tell you... You THINK you will be OK until it happens and then you realize you aren't.

I am lucky because I am 6ft6" and I went through in 6fow I probably wouldn't be here today if the water was deeper

With a float suit your biggest enemy would be hypothermia. Forget swimming, it's not happening . With a float suit,. It could help you get on top of the I e but if it keeps breaking it's bad. A float suit will increase the time you are alive and visible for rescue

I believe that picks (screw drivers will do) attached to your wrists are key.
Also any ice fisher who ventures on dicey ice should view the dr popsicle ice safety video on youtube,
keeping your head above water in the first two minutes is essential
