I have a newer (2005) 25hp mercury tiller, occasionally when I'm in forward and need to shift to reverse, the system seems to bind up. There is no grinding, but the handle will not turn into reverse. All controls are in the twist handle. I have had it into several shops and it will not replicate the problem. it doesn't do it all the time but seems to be increasing. When I make the shift I make sure the engine has slowed and is at idle.. Any suggestions would be great, thanks Tom

I know it seems too mindless, but if you have a throttle lock, release it completely. Worked on a Merc 9.9

I had a Mariner with the same shifter. The shifting can be a pain in tight spots where your trying to quickly shift from forward to reverse.

Mine never worked the way I thought it should. Problems with stalling and grinding.

A friend of mine had the Merc version of the motor and it wouldn't work well in cold weather. He'd give it some gas, it would go into gear and stall.

Mercury offered a lot of kits for these motors, one of the kits for the Mariner was a side shifter.

I considered a side shifter kit, but opted to go to a different motor.

Good luck.
