Bay of Quinte angling survey—opening weekend results
The Bay of Quinte supports a high quality recreational fishery for Walleye. On May 6, 2017, MNRF’s Lake Ontario Management Unit initiated an angling survey for this important fishery. On the opening weekend of fishing (May 6 and 7), a total of 393 anglers in 166 boats (41% of the 409 boats counted) were interviewed by MNRF on-water boat patrols. Over 12,600 hours of fishing effort occurred during opening weekend. Anglers caught an estimated 1,783 Walleye. Walleye fishing success rate was higher relative to previous years’ opening weekend surveys. Of the 61 Walleye sampled by survey crews, about two-thirds were 3-year-old fish (16 to 17 inches total length) from the 2014 year-class. Sixty-eight percent of anglers interviewed indicated that they were participating in a local angling derby/tournament. The Bay of Quinte open water angling survey will run until late-November. Knowledge of the Bay of Quinte angling fishery, including the size and quality of the fishery, will help guide the sustainable management and use of the Bay's fish resources.
