Took a short tour yesterday.

Stoco Lake in Tweed is 75% ice covered. The Moira River flowing out of Stoco is covered. Lime, Dry and White Lake are frozen. Beaver Lake is covered with frazil and will freeze over in the next day or two.

The Simcoe Form is reporting Lake Simcoe is close and Lake Scugog is ice covered.

Didn't make it down to the bay for a look. Fingers crossed it'll freeze soon.

It's coming. Have my minnow tank stocked and my sled loaded.

Better finish up my Christmas shopping so there's no distractions.

Everyone have a Merry Christmas

By the way, if you know what this and how to read it, you can see there should be cold weather here (minus a few blips) until the end of the year....

Definitely a good looking start to the year. Rice lake has bays that have had ice in them all week, I will be going out on to the protected bay I fish to check the ice this weekend. Now let's just hope we dont get to much of a January thaw, because we know that happens every year.

Yeah, the report this am was two guys off Potters. If there's 3 now, there should be 4-5 in the same spot tomorrow IF it gets as cold tonight as it did last night...

This chart is from Gord Pyzer's blog on Outdoor Canada. by my reading, 6 inches can form in 2 and half days if the conditions area consistantly 0 degrees F.

Checked a couple of inland lakes yesterday morning. The lakes that were frozen Tuesday have about 4 inches of snow on top of the ice and are frozen about 1-1/2 inches.
Beaver wasn't frozen Tuesday so has no snow insulating the ice. Earliest is would have frozen over would have been Tuesday night. It has frozen about 2-1/2 inches in roughly 36 hrs.
According to the scale and the temp, there should be over 4 inches by Saturday.
Might head up and see.

Just a heads up here. The chart above is based on perfect ice making conditions. No wind, no snow and clear skies. The numbers in the chart could be cut in half if these conditions aren't present at the time. A pretty good guideline though.

Here's an informational page on everything ice http://lakeice.squarespace.com/. here is where the chart above is originally from http://lakeice.squarespace.com/ice-growth/
Everyone should take some time to read the "Cautionary Tales" while waiting for ice to be ready. This page coverers the US and Canada. There were a total of 52 fatalities last season and already 2 fatalities this year. Take care and be safe, a few early fish are not worth a life. It looks like its going to be a good season.
