Anyone care to comment on ice conditions and save me an hour drive to check myself tomorrow? I'm guessing 3 to 5 inches with a handful of experienced fisherman out there using spuds on every step, which is what I'd be doing if I give it a try ... might just try a small back lake bay depending on the info. shared.

Walked out today to see what was happening. Quite a few guys out. Some were pas the green can. Watched a guy walk out and he didn’t spud at all. He followed the well worn org that everyone else had created. Asked one guy when he came off if there was a lot of ice, he said not enough for someone who doesn’t know what they are doing...took that to be a bit of an ***....pardon my french. I know it’s early and everyone wants their ice so they can hit the eyes, but come on...I will likely wait until next weekend.

Went out to potters this aft. The parking lot was full and I do mean full. We were out in the middle of the pack. Marked 6 fish and got 2 but also lost 2. All came on the one oz shiver minnows. If you're looking for them pro tackle has a bunch. The ice was.... well look at the picture and decide for yourself. The thickness was from my thumb to where the shaft is attached to the scoop.

Thanks for the info Dan. I am from Hamilton and don't make it out too often but all of my walleye caught through the ice have been on a gold and orange sidewinder. It's my go to. Dan

tks for the feedback. fished Huff's from 1:30-4:45 today. Spudded out on a well worn path and found 3.5 to 4 inches of black ice. saw 4 eater size walleye on my Marcum Camera before 4 p.m., then turned it off and switched to flasher. nothing wanted my buckshot or orange sidewinder. last shot was a jigging rap and had a decent fish on that got off after a few seconds. then pulled this little one in after he chased it up from 26 to 15 ft. was nice to get the rust off the gear but I think i'll be waiting for thicker ice before I try again. was around 6 or 7 guys out around me. one fellow caught a 5 pounder and lost 2. not sure about the rest. gl out there and make sure you use your spud, even on a worn path!

Coming South across The Bay Bridge this morning at 10 am, we saw roughly two dozen huts out from Potters on the West Side, and a bunch more down East.

NONE anywhere near The Bridge, save for two 'hardy souls' who probably walked straight out from East of the Meyers Pier area, possibly closer to the Herchimer Street launch ramp. Hard to tell while moving.

Potters would be the 'safer' bet, but as was mentioned above, 'safer' is NOT guaranteed at this point.

The ice was around 3" black out at the bouy, after tomorrow and Saturdays temps , might want to stay away from there until a cold snap again.

There is a nice sized parking lot at "Quinte Conservation Area". No cost.

Went to Potter's tonight, first time out for the season. Anyone I talked with found ice from 3"s to 5"s so if you are not certain where you are and how thick is the ice check while you go. Ice is easy to check, hard to return from the dark side, cold as a bitch if you are lucky enough to walk back. Caught a few perch and 1 walleye between 5 - 6 pounds.[img]
