Well it finally got above -15C on Tuesday January 2nd so I headed out to Thompson's Point, Hay Bay. The wind was howling but I went out anyway. Almost had the place to myself. There was one permanent hut and a guy went by on a sled later. The walk out was really bad, about a foot of snow and some bad slush patches. There was about 4 or 5 inches of black ice and a continuous line of wet slush going north/south that I chose not to cross. I marked a a number of fish and caught three small perch most at around 2 pm. Many fish came up and had a look but wouldn't bite. I headed back at dark and the walking was even worse, had the worst slog ever. Drifting snow had obliterated the tracks that I had made on the way out. I hit one drift with knee deep snow over slush that was 5 inches deep. Really glad to reach the parking lot. With the deep snow drifts some of t he slush patches might not harden up even with the upcoming cold snap. The deep drifts will also prevent the ice from getting thicker quickly where the snow is deepest so be careful even out there
Tight lines

Oh yeah. One more detail. The Thompson Point parking lot was like what I dreamed about when alpine skiing: one foot of unblemished powder snow (except for one set of tire tracks). The parking lot hasn't been touched by a plow at all, 4WD definitely required.

Sometimes them walks just add insult to injury...or a fishless day. Been there done that more than I'd like to admit.
